βοΈ Part Eight: The First War
"Come, listen to the entire truth... only then may you decide who your real enemy is."
Arkonβs voice echoed down the corridor.
Rayan looked at Layan.
Then Adam.
Then Nour and Zero.
Adam spoke first:
β "I still think it's an ambush."
Layan agreed:
β "So do I."
Rayan nodded:
β "I do too."
Adam raised his eyebrows:
β "Wonderful. At least we're in unanimous agreement."
Rayan pointed down the illuminated path:
β "We came aboard this dreadnought to find answers. If Arkon wants to talk..." He raised his tactical light. "...we listen."
Zero asked:
β "And if he attempts to execute us?"
Adam grinned:
β "Finally, a scenario I actually have a contingency plan for."
β "Which is?"
β "We run."
π°οΈ Aboard the Orion
The flagship was unlike anything human eyes had ever beheld.
No conduits.
No physical display monitors.
Even doorways were imperceptible.
The pristine alabaster bulkheads morphed as they advanced, opening new passages automatically with seamless precision.
Adam muttered:
β "I'd give anything if they let me salvage just one small component from this ship."
Layan warned:
β "Don't steal anything."
β "I said 'salvage'."
β "Without clearance, it's called stealing."
β "Mere linguistic semantics."
Rayan whispered:
β "Both of you, quiet down."
Everyone halted.
Tap... tap...
Footsteps.
A figure emerged from around the corner. Zero immediately raised his combat arm, servos whining as they locked into an offensive stance.
Yet the approaching figure was...
Dr. Samer.
Rayan gasped:
β "Samer?!"
They rushed forward.
Adam stammered:
β "How did you end up here?! We left you back on Eden!"
Samer looked worn down, a thin cut visible across his forehead.
He explained:
β "A strike team abducted me right before you lifted off."
Layan asked:
β "Why you?"
β "Because Arkon required someone who understood human psychology and history."
Rayan asked:
β "Did he harm you?"
β "No." Samer looked around the spotless corridor. "And that's precisely what concerns me the most."
πͺ The Command Bridge
They arrived before a massive bulkhead that parted silently.
The crew stepped onto the bridge and stopped in their tracks.
The command deck was an enormous circular rotunda. At its center rotated a sweeping volumetric starchartβthousands of star clusters surrounding them in all directions.
And standing on the opposite dais...
Was Kyle.
His wrists were bound in luminous stasis rings.
Rayan called out:
β "Kyle!"
Kyle glanced over:
β "You're late."
Adam fired back:
β "We were somewhat preoccupied with not dying on our way up."
β "An acceptable excuse."
A composed voice spoke from behind them:
β "Welcome."
Rayan spun around.
A tall figure clad in ceremonial white armor approached. His hair was silver-gray, his eyes a calm, piercing silver. He carried no visible weapon.
Nour whispered:
β "Arkon."
Arkon turned toward her:
β "It has been an eternity, Nour."
She offered no reply.
Arkon stepped toward Rayan, but Zero immediately interposed his chassis between them.
Arkon addressed the droid:
β "Unit Zero."
Zero answered firmly:
β "Do not address me by that designation."
Arkon paused, then corrected himself:
β "Zero, then."
Rayan stepped forward:
β "You claimed you wanted to speak."
β "Indeed."
β "Then speak."
Arkon met his gaze:
β "I intend to explain why this war began."
π Twelve Thousand Years Ago
The holographic starchart morphed, centering on three distinct worlds.
Arkon began:
β "Before the war, our peoples were not adversaries."
Images of ancient spires, exploratory fleets, and scientific academies unspooled into the air.
β "The First Born were explorers."
β "The people of Eden were researchers and caretakers."
He gestured toward Kyle:
β "And Kyle stood among the finest minds who ever collaborated with us."
Adam blinked:
β "This guy?"
Kyle muttered:
β "I had considerably more charm back then."
Adam retorted:
β "That is exceptionally difficult to picture."
Arkon continued:
β "We unraveled the physics of hyper-dimensional transit. Journeys that once required millennia could suddenly be traversed in standard days."
Rayan noted:
β "That sounds like a golden age."
β "It was."
The projection shifted to a barren, sun-scorched world.
Arkon said:
β "Until we arrived at a world designated as Tyrax."
Its metropolises were fractured, crumbling beneath a swollen sky.
Layan asked:
β "What happened to it?"
β "Its primary star was dying."
Footage played of millions of civilians evacuating city centers in panic.
Arkon explained:
β "They had less than five decades before their atmosphere was stripped and the planet became completely uninhabitable."
Rayan asked:
β "So you tried to help them?"
Arkon looked back:
β "We tried."
π± The Verdict of Eden
A volumetric rendering of Eden replaced the dying world.
Arkon explained:
β "Eden's theoretical physicists discovered a method by which Tyrax's biosphere could be preserved."
Nour interjected:
β "By siphoning the Core of Eden."
Arkon gave a solemn nod.
Layan asked:
β "Would drawing on the Core have destabilized Eden?"
Nour answered:
β "Not catastrophically at first. But it would have shortened our planet's ecological lifespan by thousands of years."
Adam summarized:
β "So to save one world... you were going to jeopardize another."
Arkon said:
β "Yes."
Rayan asked:
β "And who opposed it?"
Arkon turned his gaze directly toward Kyle:
β "He did."
Kyle raised his head, defiance flashing in his eyes:
β "And I was right."
Arkon's composure cracked with sudden fury:
β "Eight billion lives were condemned to ash!"
Kyle fired back:
β "And saving them meant gambling with billions of others on a world that owed them nothing!"
Rayan stepped between them:
β "Wait. Both of you, stop."
He looked back and forth:
β "The entire war started over this disagreement?"
Arkon answered:
β "The political rift began there."
Kyle countered coldly:
β "The war began because of what Arkon decided to do next."
Silence settled like lead.
β οΈ The Catalyst
Rayan asked:
β "What did you do, Arkon?"
Arkon hesitated.
Nour spoke up, her voice trembling with restrained anger:
β "He attempted to take the Core of Eden by military force."
Adam stared at Arkon:
β "That feels like a rather crucial detail you conveniently skipped."
Arkon defended himself:
β "We were out of time."
Nour said:
β "So you bombarded our world."
β "I was trying to save an entire civilization!"
Kyle cut in:
β "And in doing so, you decided the lives of Tyrax outweighed the right of Eden's people to defend their own home."
Arkon slammed his palm onto the tactical console:
β "There were no clean choices!"
Rayan spoke quietly:
β "There was the choice not to start a war."
Arkon froze.
Rayan looked at him:
β "Maybe you couldn't save Tyrax... but attacking Eden didn't save them either, did it?"
Arkon did not answer. His silence was an admission.
Layan asked softly:
β "What became of Tyrax?"
The bustling cities in the hologram dissolved into ash. A pitch-black, frozen rock rotated in the void.
Arkon whispered:
β "Its star collapsed forty-two years later. We could not save them."
π The Genesis of the Shadow
Kyle spoke, his voice heavy with regret:
β "And that is where I made my fatal error."
Rayan turned toward him.
A massive mechanical apparatus materialized in the projection.
Kyle explained:
β "After the First War shattered our worlds, I became obsessed with finding an inexhaustible energy sourceβsomething capable of preserving dying worlds without extracting life from others."
Layan asked:
β "And you discovered the Shadow?"
β "No." Kyle looked at her. "The Shadow discovered me."
The laboratory recording unspooled: the tearing of the dark breach, the tendrils of black matter wrapping around Kyle's body.
He held up his blackened hand:
β "At first, I assumed it was an exotic form of dormant bio-energy. But it was a living, sentient entity."
Adam asked:
β "And you willingly let it bond to you?"
β "I didn't understand what it was."
Arkon stepped forward:
β "Yet he understood afterward."
Kyle met his eyes.
Arkon pressed:
β "And even then, he continued wielding its corruption as a weapon."
Kyle said nothing.
Rayan asked:
β "Is that true, Kyle?"
Kyle took a slow breath:
β "Yes."
For the first time, he offered no excuses.
β "I was consumed by rage." He glared at Arkon. "I wanted to end the war once and for all." He looked down at his corrupted arm: "And I convinced myself that my mind was strong enough to master it."
Zero remarked:
β "Yet the entity mastered you."
Kyle nodded faintly:
β "Incrementally."
𧩠The Naked Truth
Layan stared at the historical timeline:
β "So neither side is innocent."
Everyone turned toward her.
She laid it out clearly:
β "Arkon attempted to seize Eden's core by force. Kyle deployed an entity he didn't comprehend to enact vengeance. And the catastrophe that followed has torn the galaxy apart for twelve thousand years."
Adam muttered:
β "When you summarize it like that... the whole war sounds monumentally foolish."
Dr. Samer added:
β "Most wars begin with a decision made by leaders convinced they have exhausted every alternative."
Rayan turned back to Arkon:
β "Why return now? Tyrax burned out millennia ago. Why attack Eden today?"
Arkon answered:
β "Because the Shadow is no longer tethered to Kyle."
Rayan glanced back at Kyle.
Arkon continued:
β "It is proliferating autonomously."
π The Parasite Unbound
A broader galactic map flashed onto the screen. Dozens of star systems were ringed with expanding black coronas.
Arkon explained:
β "In recent decades, the Shadow has manifested across sectors Kyle has never set foot in."
Zero stated:
β "That contradicts our understanding of the entity's containment parameters."
Kyle countered:
β "It makes total sense."
Rayan looked at him.
Kyle added:
β "Because it has outgrown its need for a host."
Dead silence fell over the bridge.
He continued:
β "I foolishly believed I was the Shadow Lord." A bitter smile touched his lips. "The truth is, I was merely its incubation vessel."
Nour asked:
β "What is its ultimate objective?"
Kyle answered:
β "Survival."
Rayan asked:
β "That's all?"
β "Biological lifeforms consume nutrients to sustain themselves. The Shadow operates under the exact same biological imperative."
The projection rendered a star slowly suffocating, its light choked out until it became a black orb.
Kyle said:
β "Except it feeds on thermodynamic and electromagnetic energy."
Layan asked:
β "And if it is left unchecked?"
Arkon answered:
β "It will consume inhabited star systems one after another."
Adam muttered:
β "Including Earth."
β "Yes."
π― The Objective
Rayan asked:
β "Then why do you require Eden?"
Arkon pointed toward the city below:
β "The Great Tree. Its subterranean root network is not merely a reactor; it is an archaic sensory array capable of detecting the resonance harmonics of the Shadow before it consolidates."
Nour challenged:
β "And you intend to weaponize it."
β "I intend to use it to locate the origin point of the Shadow."
Kyle interjected:
β "There is no central core. I searched for millennia."
Rayan said:
β "Perhaps you were looking in the wrong place."
Everyone turned to look at him.
Rayan reasoned:
β "You established that the Shadow is a biological organism. Organisms have lifecycles. They require sustenance."
Layan caught on:
β "A nursery or primary feeding ground."
Adam added:
β "Or a home territory it instinctually returns to."
Rayan concluded:
β "Instead of hunting for an imaginary 'commander' of the Shadow, we trace the vector back to where the outbreak first began."
Dr. Samer smiled:
β "Ground zero."
Arkon shook his head:
β "We ran comprehensive sweeps across thousands of sectors. Zero returns."
Layan smiled faintly:
β "Because you didn't have Zero."
Every pair of eyes locked onto the small droid.
Zero tilted his head:
β "Why is the assembly staring at me?"
Layan explained:
β "Because you were standing beside Kyle the exact moment the Shadow first surfaced."
Zeroβs processors hummed as realization struck:
β "My archived memory partitions."
Rayan grinned:
β "Exactly."
π€ Delving into Zero's Archives
Zero cautioned:
β "Portions of my legacy memory banks are severely degraded."
Adam asked:
β "Can they be reconstructed?"
β "Potentially."
Arkon offered:
β "We possess neuro-computational arrays capable of parsing deep-level ancient files."
Zero replied instantly:
β "I do not trust your hardware."
Arkon nodded:
β "Understandable."
Adam stepped in:
β "I'll supervise the interface personally."
Layan added:
β "And I will audit the raw data stream."
Zero turned to Rayan:
β "What is your assessment?"
Rayan said gently:
β "The choice is yours, Zero."
Zero paused for a second, then nodded:
β "Proceed."
Adam said:
β "Brilliant!" He turned to Arkon: "And if your machine so much as attempts to turn him into a toaster, I will dismantle this ship bolt by bolt."
Arkon arched an eyebrow:
β "Do you possess that capability?"
Adam replied with a grin:
β "No. But I'll certainly give it my best shot."
π§ The Legacy Record
Zero was docked into a circular scanning cradle. Thousands of holo-frames flickered into the airβfragmented memories of Eden, of ancient labs, of Kyle before his fall.
Then... the stream stabilized.
Layan pointed:
β "Right there!"
A younger Kyle appeared in the projection, free of any dark corruption, working alongside an earlier version of Zero.
Historical Kyle stated:
"The anomalous signal is not originating from deep space."
Historical Zero inquired:
"Then what is its provenance?"
Kyle checked his telemetry:
"From deep within a planetary crust."
Rayan leaned forward:
β "Which world?"
Navigational telemetry compiled: stellar coordinates, orbital trajectories.
Dr. Samer breathed:
β "I recognize that binary system."
Arkon added:
β "As do I."
A rendering of the planet resolved: a small, desolate gray sphere orbiting a white dwarf star.
Historical Kyleβs recording spoke the final piece:
"Designation: Nirav."
The playback ended.
Zeroβs optical units flared back online. He sat up slowly:
β "I remember. Kyle did not breach the initial threshold in his laboratory." He turned toward Kyle. "You extracted something from Nirav."
Kyle closed his eyes, exhaling heavily:
β "Yes."
Rayan asked:
β "What did you take?"
β "A stone."
Adam stared at him:
β "All of this madness started over a rock?!"
Kyle answered:
β "We assumed it was a mineral formation."
πͺ¨ Nirav
Kyle brought up a scan of the artifact: a jagged black shard the size of a human palm.
He explained:
β "We excavated it four kilometers beneath the surface of Nirav."
Layan asked:
β "And what was it in reality?"
β "A living fragment of the Shadow."
Rayan said:
β "Then if we want to understand how to neutralize it..."
Zero finished:
β "...we must return to Nirav."
Arkon offered:
β "I can mobilize an entire battle fleet to secure the perimeter."
Rayan countered instantly:
β "No."
β "Why?"
β "Because the last time you deployed a battle fleet to resolve a crisis, you triggered a war that lasted twelve thousand years."
Adam leaned over to Layan and whispered:
β "Point to Rayan."
Rayan outlined the strategy:
β "A small strike team. We scout the surface first, analyze what's down there, and only then formulate an operational response."
Arkon asked:
β "And who leads this reconnaissance?"
Rayan glanced back at his crew.
Adam grinned:
β "I know that look."
Layan smiled:
β "So do I."
Rayan declared:
β "The crew of the Blue Eagle."
π€ The Armistice
Arkon looked toward Kyle:
β "And what of him?"
Rayan said:
β "He comes with us."
Adam winced:
β "Hold on a secondβ"
Layan cautioned:
β "Rayan..."
Rayan stood his ground:
β "Kyle is the only living person who set foot on Nirav and survived. But he will not hold command."
Kyle asked:
β "And who commands?"
Rayan met his gaze:
β "I do."
Kyle smirked:
β "You're a child."
Rayan countered evenly:
β "And the adults in this room spent twelve thousand years fighting a war they couldn't finish."
Adam waited two seconds, then nodded:
β "Two points to Rayan."
Even Nour let out a quiet smile.
Arkon extended his armored hand toward Kyle:
β "An armistice until the mission concludes."
Kyle looked at the outstretched hand. He did not take it, but said:
β "An armistice."
Rayan nodded:
β "Good enough for us."
π Vector: Nirav
Hours later, the crew stood before the Blue Eagle in the hangar bay.
This time, Kyle stood among their ranks.
Adam stepped up to him, wagging a finger:
β "Ship rules, ancient warlord: Rule one: Do not touch the engine core. Rule two: Zero Shadow abilities aboard my ship. Rule three: That's my designated seat." He pointed toward a cozy starboard chair.
Kyle scoffed:
β "I have commanded interstellar empires."
Adam replied:
β "Fascinating. Sit back there." He pointed straight to the rear jump seat.
Nour laughed, and Rayan couldn't help but smile.
The crew boarded.
Rayan took the helm, with Layan at communications and navigation beside him. Behind them sat Adam, Zero, and Nour, while Kyle occupied the rear jump seat.
Rayan asked:
β "Heading?"
Layan locked the jump vector:
β "Nirav."
The drives engaged. The Blue Eagle cleared the hangar bay of the Orion, watching Eden slowly shrink into a bright jewel against the void.
Rayan said:
β "This time, we aren't hunting for superweapons."
Layan added:
β "Nor ancient vaults."
Adam asked:
β "Then what are we looking for?"
Rayan looked forward at the distant white star:
β "A simple answer: Where did the Shadow come from... and how do we end it?"
πͺ Three Days Later
Nirav appeared in the forward viewport.
A dead, pale gray world.
No atmospheric storms.
No cities.
No radio transmissions.
Adam observed:
β "Looks completely lifeless."
Zero scanned the planetary crust:
β "Sensory sweeps confirm zero surface biosignatures."
Kyle remarked from the back:
β "It was completely barren when I arrived all those centuries ago, too."
Rayan ordered:
β "Initiate deep-subsurface ground-penetrating radar."
A few tense moments ticked by.
Layan called out:
β "I've got a return."
A structural wireframe of the planet mapped across the main display. Beneath the desolate crust lay an enormous, sprawling subterranean labyrinth of carved tunnels.
Adam leaned in:
β "Are those natural geological faults?"
Kyle answered:
β "No."
Rayan turned toward him:
β "Were those tunnels there when you first landed?"
Kyleβs face tightened:
β "No. They weren't."
Zero chimed in:
β "I am registering kinetic movement within the lower tunnel network."
Adam frowned:
β "You just said there was no life down there!"
Zero corrected:
β "I stated there was no life on the surface."
Rayan asked:
β "How many targets are tracking?"
The sensor counter began ticking up rapidly:
12...
48...
170...
600...
Until the counter froze at:
8,421.
Dead silence dropped over the cockpit.
Adam swallowed hard:
β "Right..." He cleared his throat. "...perhaps we should have brought Arkonβs battle fleet after all."
Rayan offered a tense smile:
β "A little late for that."
The Blue Eagle dipped into the upper atmosphere, beginning its descent.
Ahead lay an abandoned world, eight thousand hostile bio-signatures stirring beneath the crust... and a small crew tasked with unraveling the truth before the rest of the swarm awakened.
To be continued...
