π Rayan β The Child from the Stars
Part Six of the Adventures of Rayan and the Blue Eagle Crew π
β "Rayan... you were not born on Earth."
Rayan remained frozen, staring at Zero.
He could not speak.
Before his eyes hung the shattered remains of Earth: half the world missing, titanic continental plates drifting aimlessly into the void.
Finally, he found his voice:
β "What do you mean?"
The ancient, battle-scarred Zero stepped closer. Scratches pitted his metallic chassis, and one of his optical sensors was dark and lifeless.
β "The truth reaches further back than you can imagine."
Anger flashed through Rayan's voice:
β "Then start from the beginning!"
Zero looked toward the ruined planet.
Then he spoke:
β "Very well..."
β "Three hundred and forty-seven years ago..."
β "...I was the one who found you."
π 347 Years Ago
Everything around Rayan dissolved.
The shattered Earth faded.
Open space opened up, revealing a solitary, compact starship cruising among the stars.
Rayan asked:
β "What is this?"
β "A memory."
Inside the vessel, an earlier incarnation of Zero appearedβhis chassis pristine, polished, and gleaming.
He said:
β "I was fleeing Eden just as the first war with the Shadow erupted."
A ripple of radiant light bloomed before the ship's prow.
Then...
A small object drifting in the cosmic vacuum.
A stasis capsule.
Zero maneuvered alongside and released the hatch.
Inside...
Lay a newborn infant.
Rayanβs eyes widened in sheer disbelief:
β "Me?"
β "Yes."
Rayan demanded:
β "Who placed me there?"
Zero fell silent.
β "I do not know."
β "You're lying!"
β "I am not."
Zero looked directly at him:
β "However, the capsule bore a solitary emblem."
A glyph illuminated before them: a circle enclosing a radiant star.
Zero said:
β "The exact same insignia carved behind the Gate of Eden."
𧬠The Impossible Child
Holographic projections materialized, displaying Zero conducting comprehensive diagnostic scans on the child.
He explained:
β "I attempted to trace your planetary origin."
Thousands of database queries flashed across the interface: zero matches.
β "I sequenced your genetic code."
β "And what did you find?"
Zero met his gaze:
β "A portion of your genome resembles baseline human biology."
β "And the rest?"
β "I found no equivalent in any recorded civilization across the cosmos."
Rayan asked:
β "So... I'm an alien?"
Zero paused:
β "Technically..."
He hesitated.
β "Your phrasing is becoming almost as reckless as Adam's."
Zero added:
β "I learned it from him."
Rayan managed a dry laugh despite his mounting fear.
Yet Zero pressed on:
β "You are not an extraterrestrial in the conventional sense."
β "Then what am I?"
Zero began:
β "I believe you areβ"
Static tore across the projection.
Kshhhhhh!
Rayan shouted:
β "What is happening?!"
Zero scanned the perimeter:
β "Someone is actively breaching this memory partition."
ποΈ Back on Eden...
At that exact moment...
Rayanβs physical body stood motionless before the Great Gate, eyes shut tight.
Layan laid a steady hand on his shoulder:
β "Rayan! Listen to me!"
Adam checked his scanner:
β "His vital signs are stable, but he's completely unresponsive."
Aura explained:
β "His consciousness has crossed the threshold."
Adam urged:
β "Then pull him back!"
β "I cannot."
β "Why not?!"
Aura looked at the archway:
β "Because it is no longer anchored to Eden."
Layan asked:
β "Where is he, then?"
Aura answered:
β "In time."
Suddenly...
The entire subterranean city shuddered violently.
BOOOOOOOOOM!
Plumes of crystalline dust billowed through the air.
The Golden Sentinel hailed across the emergency frequency:
"Eden perimeter defenses compromised."
Adam asked:
β "How many dreadnoughts breached the line?"
The Sentinel fell silent.
Adam muttered:
β "I hate your silences."
"Zero vessels."
Everyone exchanged stunned glances.
Layan asked:
β "What?"
The Sentinel answered:
"A single individual has entered."
Auraβs expression drained of all color.
She whispered:
β "Kyle..."
π Arrival of the Shadow Lord
Above the spires of Eden...
A small obsidian rift tore open.
No armada spilled forth.
No dropships descended.
Only a solitary figure stepped out.
He descended with eerie slowness, his boots settling onto the grass.
The instant they touched the soil, the surrounding flora withered, blackened by ash.
He lifted his head: half his face was human; the other half billowed as living, roiling dark vapor.
The Shadow Lord.
Kyle.
Dozens of Edenβs wardens converged, encircling him.
One leveled a heavy rifle.
Auraβs voice screamed over the comms:
β "Hold your fire!"
Too late.
Hundreds of radiant energy beams fired simultaneously.
WHOOOOOOOOSH!
A blinding detonation engulfed Kyle.
Adam asked:
β "Did we get him?"
The smoke cleared.
Kyle stood precisely where he had landed, entirely unharmed.
He raised a single index finger.
Instantaneously, every weapon fell dead silent, their power cells drained.
He flicked his finger upward: the wardens were lifted into the air and hurled violently across the plaza.
BOOM!
Adam blinked:
β "Right."
He looked at Layan:
β "I formally retract 'Did we get him?'."
π Evacuation
Aura called out:
β "We must move Rayan immediately!"
Adam and Layan grabbed his shoulders.
The moment they attempted to haul him back, the gate behind him flared with white fire.
An inscription etched itself into the air:
"Do not sever the connection."
Layan warned:
β "If we move him now, his mind may never return."
A rhythmic sound echoed through the courtyard.
Step...
Step...
Kyle was advancing.
Adam whispered:
β "Layan..."
β "I know."
β "Do you have a plan?"
She glanced around, then locked onto the massive branches of the Great Tree towering above them:
β "Possibly."
Adam smiled weakly:
β "What's our probability of success?"
β "You don't want to know."
β "Great. Now I'm officially terrified."
β³ Within the Memory
Rayan asked:
β "Who is trying to force their way in?"
Zero answered:
β "Kyle."
A black stain bled across the simulated sky, expanding outward.
Zero urged:
β "We must disconnect."
Rayan seized his arm:
β "I'm not leaving until you tell me!"
β "Rayanβ"
β "What am I?!"
Zero looked at him for a long moment, then spoke:
β "Inside the capsule where I found you, an encoded message was recorded."
Words materialized before them:
"Do not allow the child to return to the Source."
Rayan asked:
β "The Source?"
β "I believe it refers to the realm beyond the Gate of Eden."
A second line unraveled:
"Should he return... the Living Gateway shall awaken."
Rayan asked:
β "The Living Gateway?"
Zero looked directly at him:
β "You."
Dead silence fell over the void.
Rayan asked:
β "I am a gateway?"
β "Not your flesh."
Zero pointed to his chest:
β "Something housed within you."
β "What?"
β "An energy singularity unlike anything I have ever cataloged."
β "And it can open a gate?"
β "Not merely one."
Thousands of star clusters flared to life around them, bound by glowing conduits.
Zero said:
β "All of them."
π The Cosmic Web
Rayan pieced it together:
β "That's why the Shadow Lord is hunting me."
β "Yes."
β "He can use me to access any coordinate?"
β "Any world."
Zero paused:
β "And quite possibly, any era."
Rayan looked back at the fractured Earth.
β "Is that why Earth was destroyed?"
Zero replied:
β "I do not possess that data."
A voice spoke from behind them:
"I do."
They spun around.
The older Rayan stood there.
Rayan demanded:
β "Who are you, really?"
The figure stepped closer:
β "I told you."
β "You're me?"
β "A potential timeline of you."
Zero interjected:
β "Do not trust him."
The older Rayan smiled:
β "And you intend to trust Zero?"
Rayan looked back at the droid.
The older self added:
β "Ask him what he did immediately after he retrieved you."
Rayan asked:
β "What does he mean?"
Zero offered no reply.
β "Zero?!"
The older Rayan insisted:
β "Tell him."
Zero lowered his head:
β "I brought you to Earth."
β "I know that."
β "However, prior to that..."
He stopped.
β "...I executed a selective wipe of my own memory banks."
Rayan asked:
β "Why?"
Zero met his eyes:
β "So that even if the Shadow Lord captured me... he could never trace who dispatched you."
π¨ The Messenger
Rayan gasped:
β "Then you knew who placed me inside that capsule!"
β "I used to know."
β "And who was it?!"
β "The data was purged."
Rayan yelled:
β "Zero!"
Zero said:
β "It was the only viable contingency to ensure your survival."
The older Rayan stepped forward:
β "Yet he overlooked a critical detail."
Zero snapped:
β "Silence."
The older self smiled:
β "Memories can be wiped from silicon..."
He pointed directly at Rayan:
β "...but they can seek refuge in someone else."
Zero froze. For the first time, genuine alarm registered across his interface.
Rayan asked:
β "What does that mean?"
The older self answered:
β "The memory is locked inside you."
π§ The Hidden Archive
Zero stepped toward Rayan:
β "It is possible that when you were an infant, I cached a backup partition of my core memory into your neural pathways."
Rayan asked:
β "How do we unlock it?"
Zero replied:
β "I do not have the protocol."
The older self said:
β "I do."
He raised his palm, conjuring a doorway of light.
β "Step through, and you will learn who sent you."
Rayan moved toward it.
Zero shouted:
β "Stop!"
Rayan halted:
β "Why?"
Zero analyzed the luminous field:
β "A structural anomaly is present."
He completed the scan:
β "That is not a memory construct."
The older Rayanβs expression shifted.
Zero declared:
β "It is an active dimensional gate."
Suddenly, the figureβs eyes flared crimson.
He smiled:
β "Well observed, Unit Zero."
Rayan recoiled.
It was not an older version of himself.
The visage began to warp. The frame expanded, half of it disintegrating into black smoke, revealing Kyleβthe Shadow Lord.
He sneered:
β "Yet you realized it a moment too late."
βοΈ Two Places at Once
Rayan stammered:
β "How can you be here and on Eden at the same time?"
Kyle smiled:
β "Time and space are elegant boundaries... when you are bound to obey them."
He looked at Rayan:
β "I am no longer bound."
Zero stepped between them:
β "You will not take him."
Kyle countered:
β "I did not come to take him."
He pointed toward the gateway:
β "I came so he could choose for himself."
Rayan asked:
β "Choose what?"
Kyle answered:
β "The truth."
He glanced at Zero:
β "Or the curated lies of your companions."
Zero urged:
β "Do not heed him."
Kyle smirked:
β "Then enlighten him about Project Rayan, Unit Zero."
Zero froze completely.
Rayan demanded:
β "Project what?!"
π₯ Layan's Gambit
Back on Eden...
Kyle reached the base of the Great Tree.
Adam and Layan stood guarding Rayanβs physical body.
Adam swallowed:
β "He's entirely too close."
Layan whispered:
β "Wait."
β "Wait for what?!"
β "Three seconds."
Kyle crossed the threshold.
Three.
He locked eyes with them.
Two.
A faint smirk crossed his face.
One.
Layan screamed:
β "Now!"
Adam slammed the detonator switch.
Instantly, the Great Tree flared with blinding light. Thousands of radiant beams surged from its root system, sealing the chamber into an energy cage around Kyle.
His advance halted.
Adam shouted:
β "It held!"
Layan countered:
β "Don't celebrate yet."
Kyle raised an arm. The barrier shuddered violently under localized gravimetric pressure.
CRACK!
A fissure raced across the energy field.
Adam asked:
β "How long will that hold?!"
β "Sixty seconds!"
Another fracture spiderwebbed across the lattice.
β "Make that thirty!"
Layan grasped Rayanβs hand tightly:
β "Rayan..."
Her voice dropped to a desperate plea:
β "If you can hear me... come back to us."
β€οΈ The Voice
Inside the memory construct...
A distant echo reached Rayanβs ears:
"Rayan..."
He turned around:
β "Layan?"
Kyle commanded:
β "Disregard it."
Then another voice cracked through:
"Rayan! If you can hear us, wrap it up! Because I am down to an exceptionally terrible backup plan!"
Rayan smiled:
β "Adam."
Kyle leaned in:
β "They have no idea what you truly are."
A third voice resonatedβAuraβs:
"You define who you become, not the world you originated from."
Rayan faced Kyle.
He said:
β "Maybe I don't know where I came from."
He stepped back beside Zero.
β "And maybe Zero kept things from me."
He looked straight into Kyle's eyes:
β "But I know exactly who I belong with."
Kyle's smirk vanished:
β "A fatal error in judgment."
Rayan replied:
β "We make a habit of those."
Zeroβs vocal module emitted a brief chime:
β "You most certainly acquired that trait from Adam."
πͺ The Extraction
Zero seized Rayanβs hand:
β "When I give the word, sprint toward the light!"
β "What about you?"
β "Right behind you."
Kyle expanded into a towering vortex of pure shadow:
β "You will not leave!"
Zero yelled:
β "Now!"
Rayan sprinted. The ground disintegrated behind his heels as Kyleβs tendrils lunged forward, closing the distance: five meters... three meters... one meter.
Rayan threw himself forward.
WHOOOOOOM!
π³ The Awakening
Rayan gasped, his eyes flying open.
β "Rayan!"
Layan was right in front of him. Adam caught his shoulders:
β "You're back!"
Rayan looked around:
β "Zero?!"
Beside him, Zero's optical units flared online:
β "Operational."
Rayan exhaled with relief.
Then...
KRAAAACK!
The root barrier shattered into shards of light.
Kyle stepped through the wreckage, his expression hardened with cold fury:
β "Playtime is over."
He raised his arm toward Rayan, but Aura stepped directly into his path:
β "You will not touch him."
Kyle let out a low laugh:
β "You still do not comprehend."
He looked past her, toward Rayan:
β "I no longer require him."
Layan asked:
β "What are you talking about?"
Kyle smiled:
β "The gate was opened."
Everyone froze, looking back.
The small gateway Rayan had traversed was now standing fully unsealed, radiant and wide.
And through its threshold...
Something was emerging.
Not a leviathan.
Not a war fleet.
A light.
A small orb of white luminescence drifted into the chamber. It elongated, resolving into form: a head, arms, a torso... until a child stood before them.
A young girl, roughly Rayan's age, with flowing silver hair and piercing, luminous blue eyes.
Kyle looked at her.
And for the first time since his appearance...
The Shadow Lord took a step back.
Adam whispered:
β "Is he... afraid?"
Aura breathed:
β "Impossible."
The girl looked at Kyle, then at Zero, and finally rested her gaze on Rayan. She walked toward him.
Rayan asked softly:
β "Who are you?"
She lifted a trembling hand, resting her palm against his cheek, tears glistening in her eyes:
β "Rayan?"
He froze.
She whispered:
β "I finally found you."
He asked in a hushed voice:
β "Do you know me?"
She offered a faint, tearful smile:
β "Of course I do."
Then she spoke words that dropped total silence over the chamber:
β "I am your sister."
Rayan gasped:
β "My sister?!"
Kyle roared:
β "Stay away from her!"
The crew turned in shock; the darkness surrounding Kyle was thrashing violently.
He yelled again:
β "That is no child!"
Rayan looked between the girl and Kyle.
The girl spoke with quiet certainty:
β "Kyle is telling the truth about one thing."
The luminescence radiating from her surged. The city groaned on its foundations. In the sky above, the Shadow vessels halted in place, and their dark rifts collapsed one after another.
Rayan asked:
β "About what?"
She looked down at her hands, then lifted her eyes to meet his:
β "I am not human."
Zero froze. Diagnostic warnings scrolled across his optic sensors:
Energy output beyond measurable limits.
Source origin: Unregistered.
Then the readout recalculated:
Source signature identified.
Zero looked at the girl:
β "No..."
Rayan asked:
β "What is it, Zero?"
Zero stepped back, his voice synthetic and hushed:
β "Rayan... she did not emerge from beyond the gate."
All eyes locked onto him. He pointed at the girl:
β "She is the gate itself."
At that very moment, the girl looked up toward the sky:
β "They have located us."
Rayan asked:
β "Who?"
She looked at him with unmistakable terror.
Before she could answer...
The stars above Eden vanished.
Every single one.
And out of the absolute dark emerged an entity so colossal it eclipsed the curvature of the world itself.
The girl whispered:
β "The ones who built us."
To be continued... π
