Part Four: Zero β The Secret of Unit Zero
17:39...
17:38...
17:37...
The countdown consumed the primary display.
Rayan stared at Zero:
β "What did you say?"
Zero lowered his head:
β "The Shadow Lord was the one who built me."
Dead silence gripped the bridge.
Even Adam, who invariably had something to say, stood entirely speechless.
Layan took a step back:
β "Zero... are you certain?"
Zeroβs optical sensors flickered crimson for a split second, then stabilized back to deep blue:
β "Fragments of my legacy partitions are beginning to restore."
Suddenly, the Golden Sentinel raised his head, his deep voice resounding through the hall:
"Erroneous premise."
Everyone turned to him.
Rayan asked:
β "What do you mean?"
The Sentinel approached Zero:
"The Shadow Lord did not engineer Unit Zero."
Zero looked up:
β "Yet I saw him within my recovered memory banks."
The Sentinel answered:
"Because you stood beside him."
He paused, then added:
"Before he ever fell to the Shadow."
β³ Millennia Ago
The hall bathed in light as volumetric projections flared across the air.
Earth vanished.
The subterranean dreadnought vanished.
Suddenly, they found themselves standing in the center of an awe-inspiring metropolis beneath a golden sky.
Sky-cruisers wove between gleaming spires.
Terraced gardens hung weightlessly in mid-air.
Countless beings walked along wide avenues below.
Layan murmured:
β "The city that appeared in Zeroβs memory..."
The Sentinel declared:
"Designation: Orian."
The projection resolved into a laboratory, where a tall figure stood draped in a white ceremonial robe.
Beside him stood a compact utility droid:
Zero.
Adam gasped:
β "That's you!"
Zero watched the projection in silence.
The Sentinel continued:
"Over twelve thousand years ago, the scientist Kyle stood as Orianβs greatest mind."
Rayan asked:
β "Kyle?"
The Sentinel continued:
"He sought to pierce the absolute boundaries of our known universe."
A colossal circular ring assembly appeared before them.
Dr. Samer breathed:
β "The Gate..."
"Affirmative."
The historical recording played forward.
Kyle keyed an ignition switch, powering up the ring. A dark rift tore through the centerβnarrow at first, then violently expanding.
Kyle stared in wonder.
Abruptly, an amorphous black substance surged through the aperture, wrapping around his arm, then climbing across his torso.
He screamed.
Surrounding scientists scrambled to trigger an emergency scram, but the controls failed to respond.
When Kyle lifted his head again...
His eyes burned crimson.
Zero murmured softly:
β "The Shadow Lord."
The Sentinel corrected:
"Kyle did not engineer the Shadow. The Shadow sculpted its lord through him."
π€ The Final Directive
Another memory sequence resolved.
Zero stood before Kyleβwhile Kyle still retained his humanity.
The scientist knelt before the small automaton, resting a hand gently upon his head:
"Zero... should I falter, you must never allow the Gate to remain unsealed."
Inside the memory, Zero answered:
β "I will protect you."
Kyle managed a tragic smile:
"No. Protect the cosmos from what I become."
The projection collapsed, leaving Zero motionless in the center of the deck.
Rayan realized:
β "That is why you are the Key."
The Sentinel confirmed:
"Unit Zero houses the sole root cipher capable of overriding the Gate network."
Layan caught on:
β "Which means Zero can seal the Earth Gate!"
The Sentinel replied:
"Affirmative."
Adam smiled:
β "Brilliant! Where's the catch?"
The Sentinel said nothing.
Adamβs smile faded as he eyed the machine:
β "Every time you drop dead silent after the word 'affirmative,' things go sideways."
The Sentinel spoke flatly:
"To collapse the threshold, Unit Zero must cross into the event horizon."
Adamβs expression fell completely.
Rayan asked:
β "And what happens to him?"
The Sentinel answered:
"He will never return."
π The Choice
14:26...
14:25...
14:24...
Rayan snapped without hesitation:
β "No."
The Sentinel stated:
"There is no operational alternative."
β "Then we find one."
Zero spoke up:
β "Rayan..."
β "I said we find one!"
Zero stepped closer:
β "If this was my core directiveβ"
Rayan cut him off:
β "You are not a directive."
Zero paused.
Rayan looked him dead in the eyes:
β "You're one of us."
Adam crossed his arms:
β "And you still owe me seventeen maintenance overhauls."
Layan corrected:
β "Eighteen."
Adam glanced at her:
β "Why eighteen?"
β "You forgot his reversed digit on the Forbidden World."
Zero looked down at the hand Adam had realigned, then remarked:
β "This dialogue is entirely sentimental and mathematically unsound."
Adam grinned:
β "Look at you, picking up bad habits from us."
Suddenly...
BOOOOOM!
The dreadnought shuddered violently.
π¨ Surface Breach
A tactical surface map projected above the pit. Hundreds of obsidian warships were descending through the atmosphere into the desert basin.
The Sentinel announced:
"Shadow vanguard forces have converged on our subterranean coordinate."
13:02...
Rayan opened an open comms frequency to Earthβs planetary defense:
β "This is the Blue Eagle. Does anyone read?!"
Static crackled, then cleared:
β "We read you, Blue Eagle!"
Rayan ordered:
β "Route every atmospheric combat craft to our vector immediately."
β "What do you have down there?"
Rayan looked at the colossal buried vessel:
β "A surprise."
Adam grinned:
β "I love surprises."
Rayan commanded:
β "Power up the dreadnought."
The Sentinel replied:
"Main drives have been cold for twelve thousand years."
Adam cracked his knuckles:
β "Give me sixty seconds."
βοΈ Awakening the Behemoth
Adam bolted to the engineering console. Thousands of alien glyphs scrolled across the interface.
He stared at them blankly:
β "I don't recognize a single character."
Layan said:
β "Comforting."
β "Current is current on any world, Layan."
Adam tore into the bypass terminal.
Samer asked:
β "What is your approach here?!"
β "The only protocol I know."
β "Which is?"
β "Crossing wires and praying nothing vaporizes."
Samerβs eyes widened:
β "That's your contingency plan?!"
β "It worked three times."
Layan chimed in:
β "And detonated twice."
β "A stellar track record."
Adam bridged two heavy conduits.
BZZZZZZT!
The dreadnought groaned. Deep beneath the deck, massive sub-light drives sparked to life.
The Sentinel reported:
"Primary grid at 20%."
Adam bridged a secondary bus:
"40%."
Another junction:
"70%."
Adam smirked:
β "Told you."
Every illumination strip flared to blinding white.
"100% capacity restored."
Rayan gripped the forward railing:
β "Take us up."
ποΈ Ascent of the Sentinel
Above ground, the desert began to convulse.
Sand dunes liquefied into cascading waterfalls. The bedrock split wide, and entire mountain ridges lifted into the air.
Then...
A leviathan breached the crust.
A black-and-gold warship kilometers in length surged into the daylight, shrugging off millions of tons of stone.
In the skies above, hundreds of Shadow warships banked into attack vectors.
Adam looked out the forward observation deck:
β "Well..."
Layan asked:
β "Well what?"
β "Our ship is definitely bigger."
Rayan smiled:
β "Let's see if she's stronger."
The Sentinel initialized tactical arrays. Thousands of golden emitter nodes unlocked along the armored dorsal hull.
"Weapons operational."
Rayan commanded:
β "Fire at will."
π₯ Battle for Earth
Lances of golden coherent energy erupted into the sky.
WHOOOOOOSH!
The beam skewered the lead Shadow destroyer, turning it into a fireball.
BOOM!
Then the second.
And the third.
Earthβs orbital defense fighters screamed in, diving through the flak. The atmosphere filled with crisscrossing beam fire, flak bursts, and expanding debris fields.
Planetary Command hailed over the net:
β "Blue Eagle, we have never seen a vessel like this in recorded history!"
Adam shouted back:
β "Neither had we until ten minutes ago!"
Suddenly, an immense mass slipped through the lunar gate, dwarfing every combat vessel in the theater.
Samer stared:
β "Their flagship."
The Sentinel corrected:
"Negative."
Everyone turned.
"That is not a vessel."
The entity stirred. A biological aperture split open along its prowβa single crimson eye the size of a stadium.
Layan gasped:
β "It's an organism..."
The Sentinel identified:
"A prime leviathan of the Shadow Lord."
The creature discharged a beam of concentrated void energy.
BOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The direct impact hurled the crew across the deck. Consoles shattered; emergency sirens wailed.
The Sentinel warned:
"Deflector shields down to 43%."
Adam pulled himself up:
β "One more hit like that and we're space dust."
π§ Layanβs Gambit
Layan leaned over the spatial topology display:
β "Wait. Hold on."
Rayan called:
β "What is it?"
β "We've been focusing entirely on sealing the Gate from our side."
β "And?"
β "Every wormhole topology possesses two distinct event horizons."
Samer grasped her point instantly:
β "If we destroy the focal generator on the far side..."
Layan finished:
β "...we collapse the threshold without sacrificing Zero."
The Sentinel calculated:
"Probability of operational success: 4.7%."
Adam muttered:
β "Higher than our historical average."
Rayan asked:
β "How do we reach the other side?"
Layan pointed at the rift:
β "We fly straight through it."
Adam stared at her:
β "Let me get this straight: Your master plan to save Zero from entering the Gate... is to throw all of us into it?"
Layan smiled faintly:
β "Precisely."
Adam sighed:
β "I'm starting to get genuinely concerned about Rayan's influence on you."
π Across the Threshold
08:11...
They had to reach the Gate, but the leviathan hovered directly across their approach vector.
Rayan assessed:
β "We have to flank it."
Samer shook his head:
β "Its targeting arc covers the entire vector."
Rayan countered:
β "I have an idea."
Adam asked:
β "A good one?"
β "Not remotely."
Adam smiled:
β "Brilliant. Now you're speaking my language."
Rayan pushed the thrusters, steering the colossal ship straight down the beast's throat.
Layan shouted:
β "What are you doing?!"
β "Making it commit to a forward strike."
The leviathanβs eye flared, condensing a ball of red plasma.
Three... Rayan counted.
Two...
The Sentinel warned:
"Energy discharge imminent."
One!
Rayan pitched the dreadnought into a violent vertical climb.
The leviathan fired. The crimson beam screamed under their ventral hull, completely missing them and striking the Shadow dreadnought trailing behind.
BOOOOOOOOOOOM!
A catastrophic explosion lit the clouds.
Adam whistled:
β "Rayan... you terrify me sometimes."
The Sentinel's ship accelerated into the wake of the blast, punching directly through the event horizon.
π Beyond the Edge of the Universe
They crossed.
The stars vanished.
Earth vanished.
Neither light nor conventional darkness existed hereβonly shifting, iridescent geometries bending through higher dimensions.
Samer whispered:
β "Where are we?"
The Sentinel answered:
"Beyond the boundaries of your cosmos."
A dark point resolved ahead, expanding rapidly as they approached.
Then the full scale became visible.
A colossal world, surrounded by...
Millions of combat vessels.
Silence descended upon the bridge.
Adam managed:
β "Millions?"
The Sentinel updated:
"Correction."
The sensor count scrolled:
"Four billion, two hundred and thirteen million combat chassis detected."
Adam swallowed:
β "I vastly preferred the word 'millions'."
Yet Rayanβs eyes looked past the armada, drawn to a floating platform drifting above the planetary pole.
Upon it rested a massive throne.
And upon that throne...
Sat a figure.
He slowly lifted his head, opening eyes of smoldering crimson.
Zero whispered:
β "Kyle..."
A quiet, resonant voice echoed through their shipboard comms:
"Greetings, Zero."
The droid shivered.
The voice continued:
"You took a remarkably long time to find your way home."
π The Shadow Lord
Kyle's face resolved on the main display.
He bore little resemblance to the man in the historical archives. Half his face remained human, while the other half swirled with living black smoke.
Rayan stepped forward:
β "Shut down the Gate."
Kyle let out a low laugh:
"Shut it down?"
He raised a single hand.
Thousands of miniature spatial rifts tore open across the surrounding void.
"Child... you have not discovered a gate."
A rift flared near a distant world.
Then another.
Then hundreds more.
"You have stumbled into an interconnected transit network."
Layan asked:
β "How many worlds are linked?"
Kyle locked eyes with her:
"One for every realm we have harvested."
A panoramic stellar map unfolded, showing hundreds of thousands of planetary systems.
Then Rayan caught a single anomaly:
Most nodes burned red, a few flickered blue...
Except for one solitary coordinate glowing radiant gold.
Rayan pointed:
β "What is that?"
Kyleβs smirk vanished instantly.
For the first time, genuine dread flickered across the Shadow Lord's face.
He roared:
"Sever the projection feed!"
Rayan turned to Layan:
β "We found something he's terrified of."
Layan magnified the golden coordinate. A designation decrypted:
Eden.
Samer asked:
β "What is Eden?"
The surrounding armada began shifting into intercept formations.
Zero spoke up, his voice hushed:
β "I recognize it."
Rayan turned:
β "What is it, Zero?"
β "Eden is not a world."
β "Then what is it?"
A locked file unraveled from Zero's core storage: radiant white light, a shimmering sanctuary, and an assembly of luminous beings surrounding an infant child.
Zero finished:
β "The place where everything began."
Kyleβs voice thundered over the net:
"Annihilate that vessel!"
Millions of interceptors accelerated toward them.
Rayan barked:
β "Layan! Cache Edenβs coordinates!"
β "Locked in!"
β "Sentinel, open an emergency jump gate!"
"Vector?"
Rayan looked at the golden waypoint and grinned:
β "Straight to the only place in the universe the Shadow Lord fears."
The Sentinel fired his bow emitters, ripping a rift open before them.
Kyle screamed:
"NOOOOOOOOO!"
The Sentinel's dreadnought surged forward. Plasma bolts hammered the shields as detonations rocked their wake.
500 meters to the breach.
300 meters.
100 meters.
One second before crossing...
A small silhouette detached from Kyleβs flagship, diving through the wake of their engines into the rift.
No one on the bridge caught it...
Except Zero.
The dreadnought crossed the threshold.
The gate collapsed behind them.
Silence settled over the deck.
Adam exhaled:
β "Did we make it?"
The Sentinel answered:
"Affirmative."
The crew breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Then the Sentinel added:
"However, an unregistered biological lifeform is present aboard this vessel."
The lights flickered and died.
Click.
Layan whispered:
β "Zero?"
No answer.
From the darkened corridor behind the bridge came a soft sound:
A scraping against metal...
Then a footstep.
Tap...
Another.
Tap...
Rayan raised his tactical flashlight:
β "Who's there?!"
A slender shadow stretched across the bulkhead.
Then came the quiet voice of a young boy:
β "Rayan?"
Rayan froze. He knew that voice intimately.
He whispered:
β "That's impossible..."
A child stepped out from the darkness into the beam of light.
Rayan stared in utter disbelief.
The boy was...
Rayan himself.
Only younger.
The child smiled faintly, his eyes flaring crimson:
β "Found you."
To be continued... π
π₯ Part Five: Eden β The First World
Who is the duplicate Rayan? Why does the Shadow Lord fear Eden above all else? And what awaits the crew in the realm where the Gate network was born?
Yet the most critical question remains: Did the team arrive at Eden... or did something alter their trajectory mid-jump?
