โš™๏ธ Part Fifteen: The Eleven-Day Protocol

11 days.

That was all the time that remained.

Across the holographic display of the Blue Eagle, two crimson beacons pulsed against the void.

One was hurtling at high sub-light velocity across deep space.

The other lay stationary, anchored within a distant star system.

And between them...

A single white trajectory line converged onto a shared coordinate:

The Intercept Point.

Zero reported:

โ€” "Based on their current vector velocities, the two specimens will rendezvous in precisely ten days and seventeen hours."

Adam remarked:

โ€” "I distinctly preferred it when you said eleven days."

Layan asked:

โ€” "Why?"

โ€” "Because the number was larger."

Rayan leaned over the navigation chart:

โ€” "Transit time to Eden?"

โ€” "Two days and eight hours."

Rayan calculated:

โ€” "Which leaves us roughly eight days to prepare."

Kyle spoke up:

โ€” "Less."

Rayan turned toward him:

โ€” "Why less?"

โ€” "Because we must arrive at the rendezvous coordinate before either specimen reaches it."

Layan checked the jump lanes:

โ€” "Three days of transit from Eden to that sector."

Adam muttered:

โ€” "Meaning we only have five days."

Zero corrected:

โ€” "Four days and twenty-one hours, if we factor in a standard operational safety margin."

Adam fell silent for a moment, then sighed:

โ€” "I loved the eleven days so much more."

๐ŸŒ Return to Eden
Two days later...

The three concentric golden rings of Eden resolved in the forward viewport.

Yet this time, Rayan did not pause to admire the view.

He gave swift orders:

โ€” "Layan, transmit our full telemetry payload to Arkon immediately."

โ€” "Transmitted."

โ€” "Adam?"

โ€” "Hitting the fabrication bay the second landing clamps lock."

Zero reported:

โ€” "Lady Aura requests a priority debrief on Pharos."

Rayan said:

โ€” "Dr. Samer will handle that."

Samer nodded:

โ€” "On it."

Rayan looked at Kyle:

โ€” "You're with me."

Kyle asked:

โ€” "Where are we headed?"

โ€” "Arkon's war council."

Adam grinned:

โ€” "Have a wonderful time, gentlemen."

Rayan turned back:

โ€” "You're coming too, Adam."

Adamโ€™s grin vanished instantly:

โ€” "Me? Why?!"

โ€” "Because the entire operational plan hinges on your device."

Adam groaned:

โ€” "I really, really need to learn how to keep my mouth shut."

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The Council of Orion
They assembled in the primary command chamber of the flagship Orion:

Arkon.

Aura.

Several high commanders of the First Born.

And the crew of the Blue Eagle.

The tactical starchart unspooled into the air.

Arkon opened the briefing:

โ€” "We have tracked an unidentified vessel transporting Specimen Three." He pointed toward the opposite coordinate: "Specimen Four is quarantined on an isolated moon designated as Mered."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Who controls the transport ship?"

โ€” "Unknown."

โ€” "Have you attempted hails?"

โ€” "Repeatedly. Zero response."

One of the First Born commanders stepped forward, his tone severe:

โ€” "Our duty is absolute: intercept and disintegrate the vessel before it enters Mered's orbital envelope."

Rayan responded instantly:

โ€” "No."

The commander glared at him:

โ€” "If those two shards merge, the Shadow's resonance will cascade out of control."

Rayan held his ground:

โ€” "And what if living people are aboard that vessel?"

โ€” "Gambling billions of lives across civilized sectors for the sake of a single ship defies tactical logic."

Dead silence gripped the hall.

Rayan looked past the commander, fixing his eyes directly on Arkon.

Then he said quietly:

โ€” "I have heard that exact argument before."

Arkon froze.

The historical truth struck him like a physical blow:

Tyrax.

Eden.

The First War.

Arkon murmured:

โ€” "Rayan..."

Rayan met his gaze with unyielding resolve:

โ€” "We will not repeat your history."

โš–๏ธ The Standoff
The commander sneered:

โ€” "You are a child."

Adam glanced at Layan, who whispered:

โ€” "Don't."

Adam muttered:

โ€” "He actually said it."

Rayan remained entirely calm.

The commander pressed:

โ€” "These are strategic military decisions."

Rayan answered evenly:

โ€” "That is correct. And I do not command your armada." He pointed to the tactical marker representing the Blue Eagle: "I command my crew."

Arkon stepped between them:

โ€” "What is your proposal, Rayan?"

Rayan laid it out:

โ€” "We intercept the transport before it reaches Mered."

Layan continued:

โ€” "We disable its propulsion units without breaching its hull."

Adam added:

โ€” "We project the Variable Spectrum Shield to sever the specimen's external resonance."

Zero concluded:

โ€” "Then we board, ascertain the crew's identity, and determine why they are carrying the entity."

The commander challenged:

โ€” "And when your strike team fails?"

Rayan replied without flinching:

โ€” "Then your fleet will be positioned just beyond the perimeter, fully prepared to intervene."

Arkon studied the starchart:

โ€” "You are asking for a tactical window first."

โ€” "Yes."

โ€” "How much time do you require?"

Rayan answered:

โ€” "Two hours."

The commander scoffed, but Rayan looked straight at Arkon:

โ€” "If we fail to secure the vessel within two hours... the decision falls entirely to you."

๐Ÿค The Accord
Arkon stood motionless, weighing millennia of regret against the resolve of the young explorer before him.

Finally, he spoke:

โ€” "Agreed."

The commander protested:

โ€” "Arkon! This is reckless!"

Arkon raised a hand, silencing him:

โ€” "We paid twelve thousand years of bloodshed for acting before we understood." He turned back to Rayan: "You have two hours."

Rayan nodded:

โ€” "That is all we need."

Adam muttered under his breath:

โ€” "I desperately hope you're right."

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Four Days
The countdown began.

On the first night, Adam slept barely two hours.

On the second night...

Layan found him passed out cold on the hangar deck beneath the Blue Eagle's starboard wing, a hydraulic wrench still clutched in his hand.

She nudged his boot gently:

โ€” "Adam."

One eye cracked open:

โ€” "The reactor didn't blow up."

โ€” "I know."

โ€” "Then give me five more minutes."

โ€” "You have a bunk inside the ship."

โ€” "Too far away."

He closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep.

Layan couldn't help but laugh.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ The Upgraded Shield
By the third day...

The crew assembled before the Blue Eagle.

Mounted across her hull plating were dozens of newly fabricated emitter nodes.

Adam presented the array with exhaustion and pride:

โ€” "The Variable Spectrum Shield, Mark Two."

Layan detailed:

โ€” "The modulation cycle now shifts phase twelve thousand times per second."

Zero flagged:

โ€” "Power consumption is severe."

Adam cautioned:

โ€” "Which means we cannot sustain continuous projection for more than nine minutes."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Is nine minutes sufficient?"

Adam answered:

โ€” "If we find ourselves needing more than nine minutes..." He glanced sideways at Kyle: "...our problems will be vastly larger than shield battery life."

Kyle asked:

โ€” "Why are you looking at me?"

โ€” "Statistically speaking, our apocalyptic crises usually trace back to you."

Kyle conceded:

โ€” "Fair point."

๐Ÿงช The Live Calibration
They brought out the captive specimen retrieved from Nirav, secured within its reinforced laboratory containment pod.

Layan announced:

โ€” "Initializing test burn at 20% power."

Adam engaged the breaker.

VZZZZ-WUM...

A radiant, shimmering field wrapped around the pod, shifting wavelengths faster than the biological eye could track.

Inside, the black mass flinched, curling inward.

Zero reported:

โ€” "Specimen resonance down by 31%."

Layan adjusted the frequency:

โ€” "Stepping to 40%... now 60%."

The black shard shrank, compacting into a dense, inert knot.

Kyle stepped forward:

โ€” "Hold the frequency."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "What is it?"

Kyle studied the telemetry:

โ€” "It isn't merely recoiling from the field."

Zero confirmed:

โ€” "Accurate. Its external harmonic beacon has been almost completely severed."

Rayan leaned in:

โ€” "Meaning?"

Layan looked at Adam with genuine excitement:

โ€” "The shield doesn't just suppress its cellular activityโ€”it severs its connection to other fragments!"

A slow smile spread across Adam's face:

โ€” "That is significantly better than my calculations predicted."

Rayan concluded:

โ€” "We can blind the two specimens from sensing each other's proximity."

Zero remarked:

โ€” "Theoretically."

Adam snapped:

โ€” "Zero!"

Zero amended smoothly:

โ€” "Empirically as well, with high statistical probability."

โ€” "Much better."

๐Ÿฆ  The Gift of Pharos
Layan wasn't finished.

Inside an isolated biological glovebox sat the flourishing soil culture gifted by Mayra.

She addressed the crew:

โ€” "We have established our electronic countermeasure. Now we deploy our biological defense."

Dr. Samer reported:

โ€” "The symbiotic bacterial colony has successfully acclimated and multiplied."

Zero analyzed the synthesis:

โ€” "The biochemical compound it synthesizes is a 99.2% match to the organic compound carried by Pharos's silver fauna."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Can we administer it to Kyle?"

A heavy hush fell over the room. Kyle looked at Layan.

She answered firmly:

โ€” "No."

โ€” "Why not?"

โ€” "Because we still cannot model its systemic impact on his biology."

Adam stepped up:

โ€” "And we refuse to treat Kyle like a laboratory guinea pig."

Kyle looked at Adam, genuinely startled:

โ€” "That is the very first time I have heard you defend me."

Adam shot back:

โ€” "Don't make me regret it."

Layan gestured toward the workbench:

โ€” "However, we can apply the compound externally."

She demonstrated: a thin sheen of the refined organic extract was coated over an alloy plate. When they brought the specimen near it, the black mass recoiled in aversion.

Rayan smiled:

โ€” "Brilliant."

Layan concluded:

โ€” "We coat the interior and exterior seals of our transfer pod with this extract."

๐Ÿ“‹ The Briefing
On their final evening, the crew gathered around the wardroom table.

Rayan took the floor:

โ€” "Final operational review."

The rogue transport ship flickered onto the tactical display.

Layan designated the intercept point:

โ€” "We engage along this approach corridor, well clear of Mered."

Adam outlined his role:

โ€” "I disable their sub-light drives using an electromagnetic pulse."

Zero verified:

โ€” "Targeting the propulsion manifold carries zero projected casualties."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Next phase?"

Nour said:

โ€” "We pull alongside."

Adam:

โ€” "Engage the Variable Spectrum Shield."

Layan:

โ€” "Breach and board."

Rayan:

โ€” "Secure the crew."

Zero:

โ€” "Triangulate the specimen."

Adam:

โ€” "Lock it into the Pharos-coated vault."

Rayan:

โ€” "And extract."

Kyle raised a finger:

โ€” "One critical variable remains unaddressed."

Everyone looked at him.

โ€” "What if the crew is carrying the specimen willingly?"

Rayan answered calmly:

โ€” "We open communications and reason with them."

โ€” "And if they refuse to stand down?"

Rayan looked Kyle in the eye:

โ€” "We make that call only after we understand their motive."

Kyle smiled faintly:

โ€” "You truly despise simple plans."

Rayan smiled back:

โ€” "I prefer plans that don't begin with pulling the trigger."

๐Ÿš€ Departure
On the morning of the fifth day, the Blue Eagle lifted off from Eden.

Trailing far behind, holding station at an extreme distance, three heavy cruisers of Arkon's vanguard followed.

Adam glanced at the long-range sensor board:

โ€” "I'm not thrilled having warships trailing our wake."

Rayan replied:

โ€” "I ordered them to keep their distance."

Zero reported:

โ€” "Current separation: 1.2 million kilometers."

Rayan nodded:

โ€” "Good."

Kyle looked across at Rayan:

โ€” "And if our tactical window expires?"

Rayan kept his eyes fixed on the forward viewport:

โ€” "It won't."

Adam smiled:

โ€” "Love the confidence."

Rayan turned slightly, whispering:

โ€” "I'm actually terrified."

Adam blinked, and Rayan laughed softly:

โ€” "Doesn't change the mission parameters, though."

๐ŸŒŒ Intercept Point
Three days later...

Zero announced:

โ€” "Sensory contact."

A lone blip registered on the forward scanners.

The unidentified transport was long, slender, and heavily scarred by micro-meteorites and old weapon burns.

Layan studied the profile:

โ€” "I don't recognize the architectural registry."

Kyle leaned forward:

โ€” "I do."

Rayan turned:

โ€” "Whose ship is it?"

Kyle answered:

โ€” "An archaic long-range scientific exploration vessel. Civilian-grade, not military."

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Open hailing frequencies."

Layan broadcasted:

โ€” "Unidentified vessel, this is exploratory craft Blue Eagle. We request immediate dialogue."

Dead silence.

โ€” "We have confirmed you are transporting hazardous classified biological matter."

Still nothing.

โ€” "We harbor no hostile intent."

Static crackled through the comm speaker, followed by a faint, trembling voice:

โ€” "...Stay back..."

Rayan looked at Layan:

โ€” "Keep them talking."

Layan spoke:

โ€” "Identify yourselves. We can offer assistance."

The voice gasped back:

โ€” "...Do not approach...!"

The transmission cut out.

Adam looked up:

โ€” "Someone is alive over there."

Rayan nodded:

โ€” "Then the protocol stands."

โฑ๏ธ The Two-Hour Clock
A secure transmission pinged from Arkon:

Intervention Window Commenced: 02:00:00

The digital timer began ticking down.

Rayan called out:

โ€” "Adam."

โ€” "Primed."

โ€” "Layan."

โ€” "Ready."

โ€” "Zero?"

โ€” "Always."

He looked at Nour, who gave a resolute nod, then to Kyle.

Kyle said:

โ€” "Let us see what awaits us."

Rayan pushed the yoke forward:

โ€” "Commencing operation."

โšก The Pursuit
The Blue Eagle closed the distance.

Suddenly, the transportโ€™s stern flared with blinding thruster plumes, accelerating at maximum burn.

Layan yelled:

โ€” "They're running!"

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Match their vector!"

The Blue Eagle surged forward.

Adam called out:

โ€” "Watch the manifold pressure! Don't redline the drives!"

โ€” "I know!"

โ€” "You always say 'I know' right before pushing them harder!"

The gap narrowed rapidly:

40 kilometers...

32 kilometers...

25 kilometers...

The transport began pitching and rolling erratically.

Layan frowned:

โ€” "That flight path is unstable."

Zero analyzed the thruster telemetry:

โ€” "The pilot is either severely incapacitated or primary flight avionics have suffered critical degradation."

Rayan held his fire:

โ€” "Hold the EMP until we have a clean line of sight on the thruster bells. We cannot risk puncturing their hull."

Adam calibrated his targeting reticle:

โ€” "Firing solution locked in three... two... now!"

Adam slammed the discharge toggle.

WHOOSH!

A concentrated pulse of blue coherent electromagnetic energy screamed across the void, impacting directly between the transportโ€™s twin drive cones.

The starboard engine cut out instantly.

Then the port engine flickered and died.

The transport tumbled into a silent, drifting roll.

Zero confirmed:

โ€” "Target propulsion successfully neutralized."

Adam beamed:

โ€” "Zero explosive decompression."

Rayan smiled:

โ€” "Outstanding."

Adam turned to Layan:

โ€” "Did you hear that?"

โ€” "I heard."

โ€” "He said 'outstanding'."

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ The Approach
Zero reported:

โ€” "Shadow resonance is spiking within the derelict."

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Engage the shield!"

Adam punched the override.

A radiant, phase-shifting aura wrapped around the Blue Eagle.

WHOOOOOOM...

Through the forward glass, dark tendrils of smoke could be seen crawling along the outer skin of the transport. But the moment the Blue Eagle drew near, the shifting frequencies of the shield washed over the hull.

The tendrils froze, withered, and retreated back inside the hull seams.

Layan cheered:

โ€” "The shield is holding!"

Zero confirmed:

โ€” "Telemetry verifies the two specimens have ceased harmonic cross-communication."

Rayan aligned the docking collar:

โ€” "Hard seal in three seconds."

๐Ÿšช Aboard the Derelict
The boarding party suited up.

This time, Adam remained behind at the flight station.

He insisted:

โ€” "Someone with operational sanity needs to mind the helm."

Layan teased:

โ€” "You mean you don't want to step foot inside a ghost ship crawling with the Shadow."

โ€” "That is also a remarkably compelling factor."

The strike team boarded:

Rayan, Layan, Zero, Nour, and Kyle.

The docking hatch unsealed with a hydraulic hiss.

The corridor beyond was pitch-black.

Zero scanned the atmospheric mixture:

โ€” "Oxygen levels are dangerously low." He paused. "Three living biological signatures detected."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Only three?"

โ€” "Affirmative."

They advanced through the gloom.

They found the first crew member slumped in an access alcoveโ€”an unconscious man breathing in shallow gasps.

Layan knelt beside him:

โ€” "He's alive." She clamped an emergency respirator over his mouth.

A few meters ahead, they found the second survivor: a woman clutching a fractured leg. She opened her eyes, saw their approach, and recoiled in terror:

โ€” "No! Stay back!"

Rayan raised his open hands:

โ€” "We're here to help you. You're safe."

She rasped through parched lips:

โ€” "Do not enter the cargo hold..."

Kyle asked:

โ€” "The specimen is secured in there?"

She looked at Kyle, and the moment her eyes caught the black veining coursing through his arm, her eyes widened in shock:

โ€” "You..."

Kyle murmured:

โ€” "I know."

She gasped:

โ€” "Take it. Take it away from here!"

Rayan blinked, confused:

โ€” "What?"

She grabbed Rayanโ€™s forearm with trembling fingers:

โ€” "We didn't steal it... We arrived at the outpost moon and found it in ruins."

Layan asked:

โ€” "Which outpost?"

The woman wept:

โ€” "The containment vault where it was buried... We arrived too late."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Too late for what?"

She answered:

โ€” "Someone else was hunting for it."

๐Ÿ“ฆ The Cargo Bay
They reached the heavy cargo bulkhead.

Zero scanned the frame:

โ€” "Elevated bio-hazard resonance behind the seal."

Kyle whispered:

โ€” "I can feel it calling."

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Cycle the lock."

Zero forced the blast door open.

At the center of the chamber rested an ancient, corroded containment cylinder. Inky, fibrous tendrils were creeping across the deck plates, yet the phase-shift field radiating from the Blue Eagle kept them sluggish and brittle.

Layan warned:

โ€” "We have eight minutes before our shield generator requires a thermal cycle."

Rayan said:

โ€” "Work fast."

They unsealed the Pharos-coated transport canister.

Kyle stepped forward.

Rayan caught his shoulder:

โ€” "Wait."

โ€” "I am the only one who can handle its proximity without succumbing to immediate resonance shock."

โ€” "And it can drag you under."

Kyle looked back, offering a faint, tragic smile:

โ€” "Which is why you are standing behind me."

Kyle stepped toward the vault. As he drew near, the dark tendrils whipped toward his boots. He froze, crimson fire flaring in his eyes for a heartbeat.

Rayan shouted:

โ€” "Kyle!"

No response.

โ€” "Kyle, look at me!"

Kyle squeezed his eyes shut, drew a ragged breath, and forced his eyes open.

Gray.

โ€” "I'm in control."

He clamped the mechanical extraction tongs onto the specimen, lifted the black shard, and sealed it inside the Pharos-coated pod.

CLACK!

Layan bolted the latches shut.

Zero monitored the diagnostic array:

โ€” "Resonance signature collapsing."

Layan tracked the drops:

โ€” "Down 40%... 61%... 79%!"

Rayan let out a breath:

โ€” "It worked."

โฑ๏ธ Thirty-Seven Minutes
They rushed back to the survivors.

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Evacuate everyone to the Blue Eagle."

Layan checked the mission clock:

โ€” "We have thirty-seven minutes remaining on Arkon's timer."

Zero hoisted the unconscious crewman over his shoulder. Nour supported the injured woman.

Kyle found the third survivor inside the auxiliary bridge: the ship's captain, badly bruised but conscious.

The captain rasped:

โ€” "Mered..."

Rayan knelt beside him:

โ€” "What about Mered?"

โ€” "The other specimen... You must not go there."

โ€” "Why?"

The captain held out a cracked datapad:

โ€” "Because the strike force that annihilated our outpost..." He coughed, fighting for air. "...they jumped to Mered first."

Rayan took the datapad:

โ€” "Who are they?"

The captain shook his head weakly:

โ€” "Unknown... I have never seen their warship designs in any database."

Kyle asked:

โ€” "How many vessels?"

โ€” "Too many."

Rayan looked at Layan.

She said:

โ€” "We need to relay this to Arkon immediately."

๐Ÿš‘ Rescue First
They crossed the docking collar back onto the Blue Eagle.

Adam looked up from the helm:

โ€” "Everyone accounted for?"

Rayan answered:

โ€” "Every single soul."

โ€” "And the specimen?"

Layan held up the glowing container:

โ€” "Secured."

Adam exhaled:

โ€” "Then let's punch out of here."

Rayan said:

โ€” "Hold your jump."

He looked back through the viewport at the crippled transport drifting silently.

Adam groaned:

โ€” "Rayan, please don't say what I think you're about to say."

โ€” "Can she be stabilized?"

Adam scanned her telemetry:

โ€” "Her drives took a beating, but her structural hull is intact."

Rayan commanded:

โ€” "Lock on magnetic tractor cables. We tow her."

Adam threw up his hands:

โ€” "The Blue Eagle is an exploratory vessel, not an interstellar tow truck!"

Rayan fixed him with a steady look.

Adam slumped:

โ€” "...I'll rig the tow lines."

๐Ÿ“ก Briefing Arkon
Arkonโ€™s holographic portrait resolved on the main display:

โ€” "Your two hours have nearly elapsed, Rayan."

Rayan reported:

โ€” "Mission accomplished."

โ€” "The specimen?"

โ€” "Contained."

โ€” "The crew?"

โ€” "Three survivors, currently receiving trauma care."

Arkon paused for a long second, genuine respect in his voice:

โ€” "Remarkable work."

Rayan added:

โ€” "However, our operational parameters have shifted."

He uploaded the captainโ€™s tactical datapad. Arkon skimmed the combat logs, his expression hardening:

โ€” "Mered."

โ€” "Yes."

Arkon declared:

โ€” "My battle fleet can achieve orbital intercept within nine hours."

Rayan countered:

โ€” "Do not jump in with weapons hot."

Arkon arched an eyebrow:

โ€” "Again?"

โ€” "Again."

A faint, knowing smile touched Arkonโ€™s lips:

โ€” "What is your proposed alternative?"

Rayan admitted:

โ€” "This time... I don't have one yet."

Arkon nodded:

โ€” "An honest answer."

Rayan requested:

โ€” "Dispatch a medical frigate to our rendezvous coordinate to receive the wounded. Hold the remainder of your fleet well clear of Mered until we recon the perimeter."

Arkon agreed:

โ€” "Authorized."

๐Ÿ’พ The Attack Footage
While Dr. Samer treated the survivors in sickbay, Rayan, Layan, and Zero gathered around the tactical console to decrypt the captainโ€™s datapad.

Adam asked:

โ€” "What does the playback show?"

Zero decoded the video feed:

โ€” "Visual recording of the assault on the containment facility."

The holo-projector flickered to life.

A remote science station orbited a lifeless gray moon.

Suddenly...

Three sleek, pitch-black warships slipped silently out of hyperspace.

Kyle leaned in:

โ€” "I do not recognize those hull configurations."

Arkon, still patched into the audio feed, confirmed:

โ€” "Neither does the First Born registry."

The warships did not unleash an orbital bombardment. Instead, they deployed compact boarding pods.

Layan observed:

โ€” "They possessed precise intelligence on the facility's internal layout."

Footage showed armored operatives clad in pressurized black tactical suits breaching the security vault.

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Enhance the shoulder insignia."

Zero magnified the frame.

Embossed upon the operative's pauldrons was an emblem: a circle partitioned into seven distinct segments.

Adam pointed:

โ€” "The number seven. Again."

Layan asked:

โ€” "Representing the seven specimens?"

Zero replied:

โ€” "High probability."

Rayan shook his head:

โ€” "Let's not guess."

Kyle looked at him with an approving smirk:

โ€” "You truly are learning."

Rayan stated the facts:

โ€” "We only know two things for certain: they are methodically harvesting the specimens, and they beat us to Mered."

Adam asked:

โ€” "So what's our move?"

Rayan looked at the star chart, then toward the sickbay where the wounded rested, and finally at the secure containment pod.

He laid out their steps:

โ€” "First: transfer the wounded to Arkonโ€™s medical transport.

Second: analyze this combat telemetry down to the microsecond.

Third..."

He brought up the orbital profile of Mered.

โ€” "...we conduct passive long-range reconnaissance on the moon."

Kyle asked:

โ€” "Without engaging?"

โ€” "Without firing a shot," Rayan answered. "I want to know who these people are before we designate them as our enemies."

๐ŸŒŒ Six Hours Later
Arkonโ€™s medical cruiser rendezvoused at the designated coordinates.

The three survivors were carefully transferred, and their damaged exploratory vessel was secured into a pressurized repair bay.

Before the injured woman was wheeled through the airlock, she asked to see Rayan.

She looked up at him:

โ€” "Thank you."

He asked:

โ€” "For what?"

โ€” "You could have obliterated our ship from orbit."

Rayan looked at her:

โ€” "We had the firepower. But we didn't know who was inside."

She smiled faintly:

โ€” "Which is why you have my gratitude."

As she was wheeled away, Kyle walked up beside Rayan:

โ€” "Your operational call was correct."

Rayan replied:

โ€” "This time."

Kyle said quietly:

โ€” "Command is not about being infallible every single time. It is about remembering that the consequences of your decisions fall upon real people."

๐ŸŒ‘ Mered
Three hours later...

The Blue Eagle slipped silently into the Mered system alone.

Arkonโ€™s fleet remained stationed beyond the outer asteroid belt.

Adam powered down all non-essential subsystems:

โ€” "Running on silent running protocols. Minimum thermal signature."

Layan whispered:

โ€” "Mered dead ahead."

The moon loomed on visual: small, cratered, gray, and silent.

Zero checked the passive arrays:

โ€” "Detecting vessels in low orbit."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Count?"

โ€” "Five hulls."

Adam leaned in:

โ€” "The black warships?"

โ€” "Confirmed."

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Maintain passive drift. Do not ping active radar."

For twenty minutes, they observed in silence.

Then Zero announced:

โ€” "Kinetic movement detected."

A shuttle broke from Meredโ€™s surface, climbing toward the lead black warship.

Layan enhanced the feed:

โ€” "They're hauling cargo."

The shuttle was carrying an oversized, reinforced stasis vault.

Kyleโ€™s voice hardened:

โ€” "Specimen Four."

Rayan asked:

โ€” "Can we verify?"

Zero confirmed:

โ€” "Extreme Shadow resonance detected within that container."

Adam groaned:

โ€” "They got it."

Rayan fell silent for several moments, then said:

โ€” "We do not engage."

Adam turned:

โ€” "What?"

โ€” "Five capital warships. We don't know their combat capabilities, and we don't know their ultimate objective."

Kyle asked:

โ€” "And if they jump out with the specimen?"

Rayan replied calmly:

โ€” "We shadow them."

Layan smiled:

โ€” "My thoughts exactly."

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ The Silent Pursuit
The five black warships completed docking operations and broke orbit from Mered.

The Blue Eagle waited.

One minute.

Two minutes.

Then crept into their sensor wake at maximum passive range.

Adam muttered:

โ€” "I can't believe we are deliberately hunting five unidentified warships."

Zero corrected:

โ€” "Technically, we are trailing them."

โ€” "Thank you for that crucial distinction."

The pursuit spanned hours through deep space.

Then, without warning, the flotilla altered course.

Layan frowned:

โ€” "Unusual vector."

โ€” "Where are they heading?"

Zero rendered the flight path.

They were not jumping toward a third specimen vault.

Nor were they vectoring toward Eden.

They were heading straight into a desolate, uncharted void between star systems.

Rayan asked:

โ€” "What is cataloged at those coordinates?"

Zero queried the stellar registry:

โ€” "According to ancient starcharts... nothing."

Adam shivered:

โ€” "I distinctly dislike coordinates labeled 'nothing'."

Rayan said:

โ€” "Maintain pursuit."

๐ŸŒŒ The Cloaked Station
Hours later...

The stars in the forward viewport began to warp and shimmer, bending light like oil on water.

Layan pointed:

โ€” "Look at that gravimetric distortion!"

Zero analyzed the distortion:

โ€” "A massive holographic cloak."

The five black warships crossed the threshold ahead and simply vanished from visual feeds.

Rayan commanded:

โ€” "All-stop."

Adam killed the maneuvering thrusters.

Zero swept the perimeter with multi-spectral resonance.

A minute passed.

โ€” "Structure resolved."

Zero stripped the sensor static from the display.

A colossal orbital station faded into view.

Not the size of the flagship Orion, but expansive enough to dock dozens of deep-space combat craft.

Adam stared:

โ€” "A hidden fortress."

Layan added:

โ€” "Completely concealed from the galactic grid."

Kyle observed:

โ€” "And the warships have docked inside."

Rayan ordered:

โ€” "Keep all systems passive. Record everything."

Suddenly...

The primary communications terminal flared to life with a clear tone:

Chime.

Everyone froze.

Adam swallowed:

โ€” "Did they detect us?"

A voice spoke over the speakerโ€”calm, resonant, cultured, speaking in the ancient dialect of Orian.

Zero translated in real time:

"To the crew of the Blue Eagle."

Rayan looked at Zero in shock:

โ€” "They know our transponder designation."

The transmission continued:

"We are well aware you have shadowed our wake."

Adamโ€™s hand hovered over the emergency drive ignition.

Rayan whispered:

โ€” "Hold your hand."

The voice spoke again:

"We seek no hostility."

Layan asked:

โ€” "Do we transmit a response?"

Rayan answered:

โ€” "Wait."

Then came the final statement:

"If your objective is to prevent the seven specimens from reuniting..."

The voice paused for a beat:

"...then our purpose is one and the same."

Absolute silence descended upon the bridge of the Blue Eagle.

Adam looked at Rayan:

โ€” "Do you believe them?"

Rayan looked out through the viewport at the colossal hidden fortress.

Then at Kyle.

Then at Layan.

He answered:

โ€” "No."

Kyle offered a subtle, approving smile.

Rayan continued:

โ€” "But I will hear what they have to say."

He stepped up to the communications console, clicked the transmission switch open, and spoke clearly into the microphone:

โ€” "This is Rayan, Commander of the Blue Eagle. If you truly seek no hostility..." He paused. "...start by telling us who you are."

A few tense moments ticked by.

Then the reply crackled through the speakers:

"My name is Elar."

"And we are the Containment Wardens."

Zeroโ€™s cranial head lifted sharply.

Layan asked:

โ€” "Wardens of what?"

The voice answered smoothly, as though anticipating the question:

"Of the Seven Specimens."

Across the forward viewport of the Blue Eagle...

A massive pressurized docking bay door within the cloaked fortress began to slowly slide open.

Yet Rayan did not order the ship forward.

Not yet.

๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ Part Sixteen: The Containment Wardens
In the next chapter, the crew does not rush into combat. Rayan seeks to uncover the truth behind Elar and his faction: why are they actively gathering the specimens instead of maintaining their isolation as the ancient Atala scientists decreed?

Ahead lies a question far more dangerous than any beast they have ever faced:
