๐ Part Ten: Outside the Hull
5:57...
5:56...
Rayan pushed off into the vacuum outside the Blue Eagle.
Instantly, all ambient sound vanished.
No thrum of engines.
No wind.
No concussive detonations.
Only the steady, rhythmic sound of his own breathing echoing within the pressurized seal of his helmet:
Hsssshh...
Hsssshh...
Beneath his boots hung Niravโa colossal, pale-gray marble blotting out half the visible cosmos.
Rayan gripped the high-tension braided tether anchoring him to the airlock rail:
โ "I'm clear of the lock."
Layanโs voice crackled crisp over the suit comm:
โ "We have visual."
Followed immediately by Adam:
โ "Try your absolute best not to drift into deep space."
Rayan answered:
โ "Stellar advice, Adam."
Zero emerged behind him, engaging the electro-magnetic clamps built into his footpads with a solid metallic clack against the hull armor.
He reported:
โ "Target Alpha is positioned nineteen meters forward along the hull."
Rayan turned his visor.
There, clinging to the dorsal plating of the starboard wing...
A mass of pitch-black matter was crawling forward.
Slowly. Deliberately.
Vectoring straight toward the main thruster manifold.
Rayan checked his grip:
โ "Let's get to work."
โฑ๏ธ 5 Minutes and 38 Seconds
Rayan traversed the ship's armored skin, pulling himself hand-over-hand along the recessed maintenance handholds.
Layan cautioned:
โ "Proceed with extreme caution. We have no telemetry on what physical contact might trigger."
Adam chimed in:
โ "Which is precisely why I brought up the heavy artillery."
An automated exterior equipment locker clicked open near the wing root. An articulated mechanical arm swung outward, presenting a long, insulated composite pole.
Rayan unholstered the tool:
โ "What is this?"
Adam explained:
โ "A standard maintenance tool."
โ "It looks like a metal stick."
โ "A maintenance stick."
Layan sighed over the net:
โ "Adam."
โ "Alright, fine! It houses a high-voltage electrostatic discharge coil at the tip."
Rayan weighed it in his gloved grip:
โ "Much better."
He closed the distance to the organism.
It was roughly the size of an open palm, yet it possessed no crystalline or mineral rigidity. Its obsidian surface was continuously undulating, glistening like a pool of living, viscous liquid.
A slender, filament-thin tendril had already bored into a microscopic seam in the armor plate.
Zero called out:
โ "Hull penetration sequence initiated."
Rayan raised the discharge rod:
โ "Get off our ship!"
He drove the contact tip home and tripped the capacitor switch.
ZZZZZZT!
The organism violently contracted, hissing into the void, yet its primary tendril refused to release its grip on the plating.
Rayan yelled:
โ "Zero?!"
โ "Amperage insufficient to overcome cellular adhesion."
โ "Alternative plan?"
โ "Affirmative."
โ "Name it!"
โ "Hit it again."
Rayan stared through his visor at the droid:
โ "That's your master tactical computation?"
โ "Affirmative."
Rayan slammed the trigger home a second time.
ZZZZZZZZT!
The tendril vaporized. The black mass peeled clean off the hull, tumbling helplessly backward into the void.
Adam cheered over the radio:
โ "One down!"
The mission clock updated:
4:51
Rayan breathed:
โ "Two remaining."
โ ๏ธ The Secondary Breach
Zero scanned the hull profile:
โ "Target Beta is situated atop the primary communications array."
They maneuvered toward the dorsal spine.
Suddenly, Layan broke through the frequency:
โ "Hold! Stop your advance!"
โ "What is it?"
โ "Target Gamma has completely vanished from our external telemetry sensors."
Rayan stopped dead in his tracks:
โ "How does a physical mass vanish off the hull in open vacuum?"
Adam guessed:
โ "Did it tumble off into space?"
Zero knelt, sweeping his diagnostic beam over the outer hull seam:
โ "Negative."
He looked up toward the cockpit:
โ "It bypassed the exterior boundary."
Dead silence gripped the comms loop.
Adam asked, his voice tightening:
โ "It went where?!"
โ "It entered the interstitial cavity beneath the primary ablative plating."
Adamโs voice cracked:
โ "Oh no. No, no, no."
โ "What's in there, Adam?!"
โ "The secondary conduit run between the outer armor and the main fuel feed lines."
Rayan pressed:
โ "And if it eats through the line?"
Adam answered flatly:
โ "Then we won't need to worry about the six-minute timer."
โ "Why?"
โ "Because the entire ship will detonate into an expanding cloud of superheated plasma long before then."
Rayan gritted his teeth:
โ "Just wonderful."
๐ฐ๏ธ Target Beta
Rayan reached the dorsal communications pod.
The second entity had already rooted several fibrous black tendrils around the base of the main dish.
Zero held up a warning arm:
โ "Do not discharge the electrostatic pulse."
โ "Why not?"
โ "The arc discharge will fry the sensitive comm transceiver relays."
Rayan asked:
โ "Then how do I pry it off?"
Adam said over the radio:
โ "There's a bright red emergency release lever mounted to the side of the pod housing."
Rayan swept his beam:
โ "Found it."
โ "Pull it back hard."
โ "What does that lever do?"
โ "Jettisons the entire mounting plate assembly into space."
Layan gasped:
โ "Wait! We'll lose our deep-space long-range comms link!"
Adam countered:
โ "Better to lose our phone reception than our lives."
Rayan locked his armored fingers around the release lever and hauled backward.
It didn't budge.
โ "It's seized!"
Adam urged:
โ "Pull harder!"
โ "I'm giving it everything!"
โ "Brace your boots and pull harder!"
Rayan wedged his boots against the bulkhead reinforcement rib, throwing his entire body weight against the lever.
SNAP!
The explosive mounting bolts fired. The communications panel sheared off into the voidโviolently recoiling against Rayan's chest.
The force kicked him loose from his magnetic footing.
โ "Rayan!"
His body tumbled backward into the vacuum, spinning out of control.
The ship vanished from his field of view.
Then Nirav spun into sight.
Then the Blue Eagle.
Then deep space.
Then Nirav again.
Rayan gasped into his microphone:
โ "I'm in a spin!"
Zero commanded:
โ "Cease kinetic movement."
โ "I'm not doing it on purpose!"
Zero launched his wrist-mounted magnetic harpoon line.
CLACK!
The magnetic head locked onto the chest plate of Rayan's EVA suit. Zero hauled the line taut, arresting the angular momentum instantly.
Rayan drew ragged breaths, floating a few meters out:
โ "Thanks."
Zero acknowledged:
โ "Acknowledged."
Adam asked:
โ "What about the panel?"
Rayan looked past his boots. The mounting assembly was drifting into the distance, with the black parasite still clinging desperately to its surface.
He said:
โ "Target Beta is neutralized."
Adam sighed mournfully:
โ "And along with it, my brand new antenna array."
โฑ๏ธ 3:12
Layan called out:
โ "Only the parasite near the fuel line remains."
Adam added:
โ "Which is by far the most dangerous."
A wireframe diagnostic schematic projected inside the lower corner of Rayanโs visor display.
Adam directed:
โ "There's a narrow access hatch situated on the ventral underside of the primary thruster bell. You can crawl in through there."
Rayan blinked:
โ "Me?"
Adam said:
โ "Zero's chassis width exceeds the service hatch dimensions by twenty centimeters."
Rayan looked at Zero.
Zero affirmed:
โ "Accurate."
Rayan sighed:
โ "It's always me."
He pulled himself along the ventral keel toward the ship's stern. The massive engine bell loomed ahead, surrounded by a maze of insulated plumbing and hydraulic conduits.
Adam reviewed the schematic:
โ "Before you crawl inside..."
โ "Yeah?"
โ "Do not touch the blue line."
โ "Why?"
โ "Superheated coolant return. It'll cook your suit."
โ "Understood."
โ "And do not touch the red line."
โ "Why?"
โ "Pressurized liquid hydrogen."
โ "Understood."
โ "And absolutely do not touch the yellow line."
โ "Why? What does the yellow one do?"
Adam fell silent for three long seconds.
โ "Adam?!"
โ "I honestly don't remember."
Rayan groaned:
โ "Your technical expertise is endlessly reassuring."
๐ง Inside the Hull
Rayan squeezed through the narrow maintenance hatchway.
The clearance was suffocating. He clicked his helmet floodlights off for a split second, then snapped them back on to cut through the shadows.
โ "I have visual."
The black mass was crawling directly along the curved surface of the main fuel line.
Layan warned:
โ "Mission clock: Two minutes and thirty-four seconds."
Rayan inched forward, extending the discharge rod ahead of him.
The organism suddenly flattened its mass, slipping beneath the shadow of the conduit.
โ "It moved! It ducked behind the line!"
Zero relayed:
โ "It is sensing your thermal and electrical output."
Rayan grumbled:
โ "Wonderful."
He wriggled further into the crawlspace.
Without warningโ
The black entity vaulted from the dark straight at his faceplate!
CLACK!
It latched directly onto the exterior glass of his helmet.
Rayan yelled:
โ "Ah!"
Adam shouted over the comms:
โ "Rayan! Status report! What happened?!"
โ "It's on my visor! It's on my face!"
The black mass began spreading like thick, living oil across the polarized glass, suffocating his field of view in creeping darkness.
Layan screamed:
โ "Do not attempt to pull it off with your gloves!"
Rayan panted, his breath fogging what little glass remained:
โ "You have a better tactical suggestion?!"
Zero ordered:
โ "Back out of the service bay immediately."
Rayan kicked backward to retreat, but his boot heel slammed into a welded bracket.
โ "I'm caught! My foot is jammed!"
He glanced down as best he could: his safety tether had wrapped around a hydraulic line.
1:48
Adam called out:
โ "Sever the safety line!"
โ "If I cut the tether in zero-g, I'll drift into deep space!"
Zero answered calmly:
โ "I will secure your trajectory."
Rayan asked:
โ "Confidence rating?!"
โ "82%."
โ "I was hoping for triple digits!"
Rayan pulled his emergency ceramic cutter from his utility belt and sliced through the braided tether.
He kicked off against the bulkhead and shot backward out of the hatchway into open space.
๐ The Fall
Rayan drifted free of the hull.
Velocity was carrying him into the black void.
The parasite remained plastered across his visor, pulsing with dark energy.
Zero called:
โ "Deploying magnetic harpoon!"
The line whistled into the vacuum.
Yet the trajectory missed Rayan's shoulder by inches, sailing past into the dark.
Rayan yelled:
โ "Zero!"
โ "Recalibrating for secondary attempt."
โ "Hurry up!"
The distance widened rapidly:
Five meters.
Ten meters.
Fifteen meters.
The silhouette of the Blue Eagle shrank against the stars.
Inside the cockpit, Adam took the helm:
โ "I'm rotating the ship toward his vector!"
Layan objected:
โ "Negative! Engaging the main drives will incinerate him in the exhaust plume!"
โ "I'm only pulsing the cold-gas maneuvering thrusters!"
Adam worked the attitude controls.
Nour stepped forward:
โ "I can project my energy to anchor him."
Rayan's voice cracked over the channel:
โ "No! Stay inside the ship, Nour!"
โ "Rayan, pleaseโ"
โ "I said stay inside!"
She fell silent.
Adam called out:
โ "Brace yourself, Rayan. We're closing the gap."
The Blue Eagle drifted forward at a crawl.
โฑ๏ธ 1:03
Layan warned:
โ "Sixty seconds remaining before structural compromise."
The black mass was now seeping around the reinforced seal of Rayanโs helmet collar.
A crimson alert flashed inside his heads-up display:
Helmet Seal Integrity: 73%
Rayan yelled:
โ "Step on it!"
Zero calculated:
โ "Rayan, when the prow reaches your proximity, physically detach the organism."
โ "I thought you said never touch it!"
โ "Operational parameters have changed."
โ "Why?!"
โ "Because we have run out of time."
Adam counted down the distance:
โ "Ten meters... eight... six..."
Zero leaned over the bow rail, reaching out his arm.
โ "Four meters..."
Rayan reached his arm forward.
โ "Three..."
Suddenly, an attitude thruster coughed, kicking the Blue Eagle's bow slightly to starboard.
Rayanโs glove swept through empty vacuum.
Adam yelled:
โ "No!"
0:39
Zero called out:
โ "Rayan!"
Rayan looked at the electrostatic discharge rod still gripped tightly in his right glove.
Then at the undulating mass blinding his visor.
He said:
โ "I have an idea."
Adam asked over the net:
โ "Is it a terrible one?"
โ "Exceptionally."
Adam muttered:
โ "Naturally."
โก Thirty Seconds
Rayan overrode the safety limiter on the discharge rod, dialing the voltage step-up transformer to maximum yield.
Zero warned:
โ "Rayan, discharging that yield directly against your helmetโ"
โ "I know."
โ "It will induce total systemic burnout across your suit's life-support suite."
โ "I know."
0:24
Layan screamed:
โ "Don't do it!"
Rayan looked toward the distant lights of the ship.
He brought the tip of the rod straight against the side of his visor, right over the parasite's core mass.
He muttered:
โ "Goodnight."
ZZZZZZZZZZZZT!
The world detonated in blinding, deafening white.
๐ Silence
Rayan heard nothing.
Saw nothing.
The HUD inside his helmet was completely dead.
No radio comms.
No oxygen flow readout.
No telemetry.
Only pure, suffocating darkness.
Then came a dull thud.
Something seized his harness.
Seconds later...
Sound rushed back like a tidal wave:
HSSSSSSSSSH!
Atmosphere repressurizing.
Rayan forced his eyes open.
He was lying flat on the deck plates of the airlock chamber.
Leaning over him were Adam, Layan, and Nour, with Zero kneeling at his side.
Adam stared down at him:
โ "Are you completely insane?!"
Rayan rasped:
โ "A little."
Layan shouted:
โ "A little?!"
Zero corrected:
โ "Correction: Statistically substantial."
Rayan let out a weak, coughing laugh:
โ "Did we get... the parasite?"
Adam held up a sealed, transparent stasis canister. Inside rested a tiny, motionless black shard:
โ "Nour caught it with the utility arm before it drifted into deep space."
Rayan looked over at her:
โ "I thought I told you to stay inside the ship."
She smiled faintly:
โ "I did stay inside. I operated the maintenance arm from the airlock terminal."
Adam proclaimed with pride:
โ "Your sister is an extraordinarily fast learner."
๐ฌ The Live Specimen
They transferred the fragment into a reinforced laboratory containment vault.
Kyle stepped into the lab:
โ "Do not disintegrate it."
Rayan turned toward him:
โ "Why?"
Layan answered:
โ "Because it's empirical evidence."
Kyle added:
โ "And it may hold the key to understanding how the Shadow propagates across the stars."
Zero took a reading through the vault glass:
โ "Its metabolic and resonance activity has declined by 94%."
Adam asked:
โ "Meaning it's fast asleep?"
Kyle answered:
โ "Effectively."
Adam remarked:
โ "I vastly prefer lethal cosmic horrors when they are unconscious."
Rayan said:
โ "Keep the canister locked down in the lab."
Adam added:
โ "Far away from the main engine bay."
โ "And far away from my bunk."
Layan sighed:
โ "And far away from everything."
Adam suggested:
โ "Brilliant. Let's leash it to the outside of the hull."
๐ ๏ธ A Crippled Starship
A new system alarm pinged across the bridge consoles:
Primary Sub-Light Drive: Offline.
Rayan asked:
โ "Adam?"
Adam dropped into the engineering seat, running diagnostics:
โ "The third parasite chewed through an auxiliary control bus before we cleared it."
โ "Can you patch it?"
โ "Yes."
โ "How long do you need?"
โ "Four hours."
Layan pointed to the orbital radar:
โ "We're sitting in low orbit over Nirav."
Adam replied:
โ "I'm well aware."
Zero added:
โ "And thousands of dormant spores are continually venting into the upper atmosphere from the chasm."
Rayan asked:
โ "What is our tactical window before the next cloud reaches orbital altitude?"
โ "Approximately 43 minutes."
Adam rubbed his forehead:
โ "Marvelous. I require four hours, and we have 43 minutes." He looked at Rayan: "That is an impossible mathematical equation."
Layan cut in:
โ "It's not an equation. Fix the engine."
๐ง Adam's Workaround
Adam pulled up the engine blueprints:
โ "We can fire the core, but we have to completely bypass the damaged governor unit."
Layan asked:
โ "What's the operational risk?"
โ "We could lose throttle control mid-transit."
Rayan asked:
โ "And what's our alternative?"
Adam glanced out the viewport at Nirav. Dozens of black speckles were ascending through the cloud deck toward their orbital plane:
โ "We stay right here."
Rayan ordered:
โ "Engage the bypass."
Adam dove under the console.
Layan monitored bus voltages.
Zero tracked the ascending spores:
โ "31 minutes."
After a tense silence:
โ "18 minutes."
Beads of sweat formed on Adamโs brow.
Nour offered:
โ "Can I assist?"
โ "Hand me the small wrench."
She passed it over.
โ "No, the smaller one."
She passed another.
โ "Smaller."
She picked up a tiny driver:
โ "This is minuscule."
โ "Precisely what I need."
Rayan asked:
โ "How much time left?"
Adam yelled from beneath the conduits:
โ "If one more person asks me about the time, I will shut down the reactor myself!"
Dead silence fell over the cockpit.
Two seconds later, Zero stated:
โ "Nine minutes."
Adam glared out from under the deck plates:
โ "You genuinely enjoy doing that."
Zero replied:
โ "A little."
๐ Engaging the Drives
The vanguard spores closed within visual range.
Layan called out:
โ "Five minutes!"
Adam threw his tools aside:
โ "Done! Clear the breaker!"
He slammed the ignition switch.
Nothing.
Rayan called:
โ "Adam?!"
โ "Hold on!"
He cycled the switch again.
Still dead.
The spores were three kilometers out and closing fast.
Adam pleaded:
โ "Come on, baby... work for me..."
He slammed his fist against the console faceplate.
WHOOOOOOOOOM!
The fusion drives flared to life with a resonant roar.
Adam smirked:
โ "Told you."
Layan stared:
โ "You literally hit it with your fist!"
โ "Advanced maintenance technique."
Rayan dropped into the pilot's station:
โ "Everyone strap in!"
He engaged the main thruster throttle. The Blue Eagle surged forward, clearing Niravโs gravitational well at maximum emergency burn.
The cloud of spores swept past their wake. One grazed the starboard wingtip before falling away into the vacuum behind them.
Zero reported:
โ "We have successfully cleared the danger perimeter."
A collective breath swept through the cabin.
Adam slumped onto the floorboards:
โ "And now..." He rubbed his aching eyes. "...my vacation."
Rayan smiled:
โ "After Eden."
Adam let his head drop:
โ "I utterly despise that phrase."
๐ The Journey Home
The hyperspace transit back to Eden took several days.
And for the first time since their mission began...
They had time.
Adam overhauled the damaged wiring harnesses.
Layan processed and correlated their telemetry archives.
Nour and Rayan spent hours sitting together in the observation lounge, talking.
She didn't unveil everything about their childhood, but she shared her own journey:
How she had survived on Eden.
How she had kept watch across the stars, waiting for him.
And how, for years, she had feared he had been lost to the void.
Kyle, meanwhile...
Sat alone in the corner of the mess hall for most of the transit.
Until Rayan walked over and took a seat across from him.
Rayan broke the silence:
โ "You're afraid."
Kyle looked up, surprised:
โ "Me?"
โ "Yes."
Kyle gave a bitter smile:
โ "I once made entire star systems tremble."
Rayan said:
โ "That doesn't mean you can't be afraid."
Kyle fell quiet. He looked across the room toward the stasis canister holding the specimen:
โ "I am terrified that what I unleashed twelve thousand years ago... can never be undone."
Rayan replied:
โ "Maybe it can't."
Kyle looked at him.
Rayan continued:
โ "But you can help us make sure it doesn't get any worse."
Kyle offered no spoken answer. But a moment later, he said quietly:
โ "You sound like a commander."
Rayan smiled:
โ "I am the commander."
Kyle smiled back:
โ "Fair point."
๐ Return to Eden
Three days later...
Eden filled the forward viewports.
The dreadnought Orion remained stationed in high orbit, its white hull gleaming beneath the stars.
Layan reported:
โ "Planetary defenses are stable."
Zero confirmed:
โ "Zero Shadow activity detected across the sector."
Adam remarked:
โ "Finally, some good news."
They guided the Blue Eagle into the ventral hangar bay of the Orion.
Arkon was waiting on the landing apron as the ramp lowered. He looked at the scorched, scarred hull of the ship, then at the exhausted crew.
He said:
โ "It appears the reconnaissance yielded results."
Adam replied:
โ "Depends entirely on how you define 'results'."
Zero carried the stasis container down the ramp.
Arkonโs expression shifted instantly:
โ "You captured an active specimen?"
Rayan answered:
โ "Yes. And we recovered something far more critical."
Layan handed him the holographic datapad displaying the inscription from the lakebed.
Arkon studied the glyphs.
Instantly... his composure cracked.
Rayan caught the flicker in his eyes:
โ "You recognize this script."
Arkon answered:
โ "Yes."
Kyle muttered:
โ "Told you."
Rayan looked between them:
โ "Who engineered this language?"
Arkon hesitated, drawing a slow breath:
โ "This script predates our civilization. We have cataloged it across multiple dead systems."
Layan asked:
โ "Systems like Nirav?"
โ "Yes."
Arkon activated a star chart, illuminating seven coordinates scattered across the galaxy.
Adam counted:
โ "Seven locations."
Rayan said:
โ "The seven containment specimens."
Arkon nodded:
โ "High probability."
Rayan stated firmly:
โ "We are not hunting down each specimen one by one."
Arkon looked at him, curious.
Rayan smiled faintly:
โ "We learned our lesson on Nirav."
Layan added:
โ "We need to find who built the containment units in the first place."
Arkon answered:
โ "There is one location in our historical records that may hold that answer."
Adam asked suspiciously:
โ "Is it a death trap?"
โ "No."
Adam raised his eyebrows:
โ "Finally."
Arkon finished:
โ "It is an archival museum."
Adam blinked:
โ "A museum?"
๐๏ธ The Archives of Orion
Arkon guided them into an ancient, restricted sector of the flagship.
A massive blast door parted, revealing a gallery stretching hundreds of meters into the distance.
Derelict starcraft.
Ancient sensor suites.
Monolithic sculptures.
Starcharts and relics recovered from civilizations that had vanished eons ago.
For a moment, Rayan forgot the looming danger.
He breathed:
โ "Incredible..."
Arkon explained:
โ "These relics were compiled by our exploratory survey teams over more than fifteen thousand years."
They walked down the central aisle.
Zero paused before a display case:
โ "I have detected a partial cryptographic match for the inscription glyphs."
He directed their attention to a small metallic artifact resting on a pedestal.
Layan asked:
โ "What is it?"
Arkon pulled up the archival manifest:
โ "Excavated during a deep-space survey mission nine thousand years ago."
Rayan asked:
โ "Where?"
A designation populated the display:
The Atala System.
Layan asked:
โ "And what was cataloged at that coordinate?"
Arkon read the entry, then paused:
โ "An abandoned research station."
Adam shrugged:
โ "Better than a planet crawling with eight thousand monsters."
Arkon continued:
โ "And what is most compelling..." He highlighted the log entry: "...the station's primary research directive was studying the containment of exotic energy organisms."
Rayan looked at the stasis canister holding the specimen.
This time, there was no hostile fleet bearing down on them.
No planetary clock ticking down to zero.
They had an exact destination.
A tangible clue.
And a clear question.
Rayan looked at the crew:
โ "Then our next jump is Atala."
Layan conditioned:
โ "After we overhaul the ship."
Adam interjected quickly:
โ "Thank you!"
Rayan laughed, then looked through the grand observation window of the archive toward the glowing atmosphere of Eden below.
For the first time since their journey began...
He felt they were no longer simply reacting to disasters.
They had a strategy.
First: Analyze the captive specimen.
Second: Reach the Atala station.
Third: Unmask the architects of the Containment Initiative.
And then...
Perhaps they would finally discover how to neutralize the Shadow once and for allโinstead of merely fleeing from it.
To be continued... ๐
๐ฌ Part Eleven: The Black Specimen
Before departing for Atala, the crew attempts a series of controlled laboratory diagnostics on the entity retrieved from Nirav. Ahead lies a battle of scientific deduction and inquiry: experimental trials, friction between Layan and Kyle over containment protocols, and identifying the true vulnerabilities of the Shadowโbefore plotting their jump to Atala. ๐
