Sir Tariq was a knight, but he was not very brave. He preferred reading books in the library and eating honey cakes to fighting dragons or rescuing castles. His armor was shiny because it had never been used in battle, and his sword was mostly used to cut giant birthday cakes. One day, the king announced that a mysterious shadow-beast had blocked the river, and one of the knights had to go clear it. Tariq was chosen.

Tariq visited the armory to find a sturdy shield. In the dusty corner of the room, he saw an old, round brass shield decorated with a smiling sun face. As he touched it, the shield opened its brass eyes. 'Well, hello there, partner!' it said in a cheerful voice. Tariq jumped back in surprise. 'A talking shield?' he stammered. 'Indeed! I am Bashar,' the shield replied. 'I may be old, but I have a lot of wisdom. And I think we are going to be great friends.'

They set off towards the river. Along the way, Tariq's knees shook with fear. But Bashar kept talking, telling funny stories and cracking jokes. When Tariq saw a dark cave, he wanted to turn back. 'Nonsense!' Bashar encouraged him. 'A dark cave is just a place where the stars are resting. Keep moving forward, Tariq!' Tariq smiled, feeling a bit braver.

When they reached the river, they found the shadow-beast. It was a giant, dark creature made of mist, blockading the water flow. Tariq drew his sword, his hands trembling. The beast let out a loud roar and shot a blast of cold wind. Tariq raised Bashar to protect himself. The wind hit the shield, but Bashar just laughed. 'Is that the best you can do? It tickles!' the shield shouted.

Bashar whispered to Tariq: 'The beast is made of shadow, which means it is afraid of light. Use your shiny sword to reflect the sunlight onto it!' Tariq realized the wisdom in the shield's words. He angled his sword, catching a ray of sun and directing it at the beast. The bright beam struck the shadow, and it dissolved into a flock of harmless night moths. The river flowed freely again. The villagers cheered, and Tariq was celebrated as a hero. He realized that bravery wasn't about not feeling fear, but about having a wise friend to help you face it.
